Ross gave a comprehensive overview of ON1 Photo Raw, the "ultimate photo editor." Since he was still in the Bahamas using a dodgy 600 Mbps line, Neil hosted the presentation deck here while Ross was able to control the cursor and advancement of slides ... slick.
ON1 has both a browsing/sorting persona and an editing persona, with all changes being performed in a non-destructive manner. It is perhaps most similar to Adobe Lightroom. While there are subscription options available, unlike Lightroom you can choose to purchase the program outright. There's no need to be tied to an annual subscription. The program is available for Mac, iPad, iPhone, PC and tablet.
Ross is using a Mac Mini with 2TB drive. He keeps his main drive about ¾ full with working images and stores his completed images on remote drives, which is not so easy to do with Lightroom. The program can also access images on his iPhone and iPad.

He mentioned many features, too numerous to enumerate here. Some examples:

- Full program for cataloguing and browsing your photos
- Metadata can be embedded from the camera itself or added by you
- Smart organizer
- Comprehensive search capability
- Mobile phone and higher end mirrorless camera images are geotagged
Editor
- Double view allows you to compare two similar photos side by side, to select the better one
- Layers can be blended without destroying the image underneath
- HDR capability to get a wider range of exposure
- Focus stacking to get a wider range of focus
- Powerful masking capability and the ability to make good selections
- Text tool is ok but not stellar
- Subtle more flattering enhancements in portrait mode, with adjustable opacity
- Liquify allows you to "push" things around on the image or make people "appear thinner"
- Presets come with the program and are provided every month
- You can alter any one and save as your own preset and share with other users
- There are different black and white presets based on different film types
- You can click on history to get a record of the changes that you have made to an image
- You can click on snapshot to save all the changes to that point that can then be reapplied to the original image
- Artificial intelligence makes a good starting point for tone and colour, white balance, noise removal and sharpening
- NoNoise AI has an amazing ability to reduce the noise in an image, which can then be fine tuned by yourself
- Weather filter can really add realistic weather attributes that are otherwise really hard to capture with a camera
- Sky replacement has become a big thing. ON1 gives you presets or you can use your own. You can flip left to right, add clouds, incorporate reflections into water.
Exporting
- There are powerful export capabilities
- Only exported photos have all the changes applied
- The program has a good fractal upsizing capability, to match your printer

Stephen Richards reminded members that streaming services Hoopla and Kanopy are available through the Ottawa Public Library. Other OPL online resources include Great Courses, Midici, NFB and Naxos.
Ross has been using the subscription service Magzter to access magazine reading material. OPL PressReader also enables online access to thousands of magazines and newspapers.
Neil mentioned that OPL has partnered with other libraries in Ontario and you can gain Hoopla memberships on each of those, to potentially augment your viewing limit ... if there were ever enough hours in the day!
In response to a question from MarySue, an older version of Carbon Copy Cloner should be able to make a bootable copy of her older Lion macOS system.
Wally was able to refurbish a 2012 Macbook Pro that he found in a dumpster by adding a hard drive. It now works well.

Time Machine and How It Can Be Used To Recover Mail – Stephen Richards
Stephen described how Time Machine can be used to recover lost or accidentally deleted emails. Using a 2011 iMac he gave a partial demo by deleting a message, invoking Time Machine, showing the folder he was looking for and clicking Restore. Time Machine then recreated the desktop today and placed the found item in a folder Recovered Messages.
Slice of Australia and New Zealand - Ferriss High
Ferriss used iMovie to create this engaging collage of photos and video clips with a lively music soundtrack. It was virtual travel and the next best thing to flying there. There was query about the cool animated map visuals and Ferriss explained that this is a feature within iMovie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etRtisrHL10
Colourizing – Ross Slade
Ross gave a presentation on adding colour to black and white film photographs using a web-based service and photo app. MyHeritage.com is a web-based genealogy service that has features to colourize and even animate the heads in black and white photographs. It does a pretty good job with the default settings and will also allow you to just enhance the faces. It's amazing to see the animation and colourization of a black and white head.
The later versions of Adobe Photoshop also have colourization using a NeuralFilters capabilty. In many cases it can discern did the correct skin tone coloured. In the event that the colourizing is not quite right, the workaround is to use masking.
The art of automated colourizing has made great strides forward. Netflix has even colourized old civil war movies.

Video with Photos Mostly Around Sidney, BC and some in Victoria and from the Van Gogh Immersive Experience Exhibition – Peter Koelbleitner
There was some stellar photography accompanied by the soulful 1st Gnossienne - Eric Satie. The photos were all captured with an iPhone XS and enhanced using the Snapseed and PCS Camera apps. Church Video Project - Wally
For this project, Wally's motto: Let the power of Matter over Mind prevail. Wally used a tripod and Canon XA-11 digital camcorder to record the videos. This features a low light sensor. Additional photos were captured with an iPhone 10. The audio was recorded separately using a Zoom Livetrack 12 track mixer and digital recorder. He then used a MacBook Pro and iMovie to integrate these components and add the lyrics and credits. Canon's User Manual and toll free number provided helpful technical support along with several YouTube videos.
Wally then screened three video clips from a slightly longer video project.
#1 Prelude: Approaching and entering his church St. James the Apostle in Perth, Ontario with a hymn soundtrack and rolling lyrics.
#2 Original recording of two musicians, zooming in an out, with lyrics.
#3 Postlude: Audio recording of the Junior choir, adding visuals, credits, lyrics against a backdrop video of the Taye River.

Equipment Setup – Leroy Hayes
A core component of LeRoy's MacHaven in Kanata is the service Plex.
Plex Media Server is a digital media player and organizational tool that allows you to access the music, pictures, and videos stored on one computer with any other computer or compatible mobile device. You can install the Plex Media Server software on a Windows, Mac, or Linux computer, or a compatible network-attached storage (NAS) device, then play it back on any other internet-connected device capable of running the Plex app.
The service works across countries and continents. Chris logs in from Tanzania as well as LeRoy's daughters in Vancouver and Ottawa.
LeRoy has a lifetime membership and the service is quite reasonably priced. https://www.plex.tv
https://nzbfinder.ws indexes newgroup server content so finding more obscure movie titles is quite easy.
Leroy can view his video content on two Apple TV's, an LG65OLED and Sony 34 inch Bravia. You can view the rest of his equipment list in the attachment below.

Jamie gave a comprehensive overview of his approach to backups. With over 50TB of images, there is a lot to safeguard! You can view his slides at the link below. Jamie's main objectives are to never lose any data in the event of computer hardware failure, fire or theft AND to minimize the time required to do the backups. To achieve this he always has three copies: one on his production drive, one on a separate local drive, and one off site (at a friend's or in the cloud). His archives of original files (untouched) are also stored off site.
There were other interesting comments along the way.
If you prefer to go with manual backups, you only need to back up as often as you are willing to redo the work since the last copy over. For most of us, it's far better to automate the backup process as part of our workflow.
Value your time. The reliability and reduced cost of the latest drives makes it easier to purchase more storage rather than have to frequently manage the remaining space on older drives. LeRoy mentioned that Coscto is now selling 8TB drives for $170; these "green, more eco friendly" products may be a bit slower but are otherwise fine for backup purposes.

During our Exec Planning meeting Wally had inquired where the Do Not Disturb toggle was now located on his iPhone. It now part of the iOS 15 Focus capability and David expanded on his June overview on how this works. You can see his presentation slides below.
Marc had been using the expanded Focus feature since the iOS 15 launch. He likes that all of his Apple devices go in to the same focus mode automatically, which includes quiescing his Apple Watch at night.
Be ready for an "avalanche" of notices once the Sleep mode is over. Marc generally waits until breakfast.
Focus while Driving is a bit different from before. It turns everything off unless specifically enabled.
Three of the Focus modes are automatic: Sleep, Driving and Fitness.
Marc generally likes these new capabilities but points out that it still needs some further streamlining.

1 - Digital Minimalism - with David Rhynas
David presented a summary of the book Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport and you can see his remarks in the presentation deck below.
Here is a collection of comments that followed the presentation.
Neil: A tradesman was doing work at his cottage work without a radio blasting because he preferred to listen to the birds and ducks; so rare! Constant radio background in the car can be very annoying. With CNN all news is "breaking news." He prefers the Washington Post Guardian for news coverage but even then, some articles are just too depressing to complete. He got rid of his Twitter account several years ago, has never had Facebook, and Linked In has done nothing for his business.
Wally: The biggest question is often not whether we can but whether we should.
MarySue: Social media is not totally useless. She uses it to follow chief agents in companies.
Laurence: He referenced a MIT newsletter. Humans were never meant to have thousands of contacts; more like a dozen at most. No matter how perverse you view on any topic, social media can link you to other crazies with the same viewpoint.
John: He shifted his focus from photography to music after he retired. Facebook helps support these interests. It has been invaluable in keeping up the social interaction with people he might not otherwise reach. Depends on how you use it.
LeRoy: He is selective with his news media consumption, following columnists, editorials, and a few people on twitter e.g. André Picard, health reporter and columnist for The Globe and Mail. His wife dropped FB because it made her anxious.

Members' M1/Silicon experiences
This was an open format group discussion.
LeRoy has a friend who purchased a $5K Macbook Pro which is now outshined by the new M series computers, at lower cost. LeRoy's M1 Mac Mini, attached to an old 24 inch monitor, has been very good. His wife has a 24 inch M1 iMac and it's a beautiful machine, excellent video and audio, 4 USBC ports. The speed is excellent.
Laurence was an early adopter with his M1 MacBook Air and has been very happy, although he tends to use his iPhone and iPad more. The Air is snappier and faster than his 2018 MacBook Pro. All of the dock apps open instantly. The newer M chips have much faster graphics and will likely take over the games market. The battery life is exceptional. Laurence has not yet tried video editing.
macOS Monterey is available as of today. Roaring Apps https://roaringapps.com will let you look at the apps that are compliant and those that are not. Apple also has a compatibility page. IOS 15 connects to the new OS. Before upgrading Carbon Copy Cloner recommends making a backup, but not a bootable one.
Currently you can make a bootable clone for Big Sur with Carbon Copy Cloner and SuperDuper. Time will tell for Monterey.
[Command Info] will indicate whether the app is Universal or Intel. If Intel, Rosetta Stone will be automatically be installed. You now can run iPad OS on M1machines.
Graham has a MacBook Air that he primarily used for travel and can confirm its snappy speed. He also has his first Apple watch with pages of settings, most of which are turned off ... "digital minimalism."
Neil has a Macbook Air with two USBC ports. You can use the USBC cable to charge at optimal charging speed with his RAVPower charger. The Air has a fingerprint sensor for authentication, which finds to be quite useful.
By the time of the meeting, Neil had already installed Monterey. It was quicker to download over his Gigabit Ethernet than to configure. He demonstrated the speed improvements using Speed Test https://www.speedtest.net and DSL Reports http://www.dslreports.com Much of the snappier performance is due to the SSD drive and just the M series chip.
The mac App Store now lists iPhone and iPad iOS 15 apps that can be installed on M1 machines. Some apps such as Snapseed https://snapseed.online and DuoLingo https://www.duolingo.com have not yet been ported over, even thought capability has been there since April.
There is a $400 price difference between the least expensive MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. The Pro has a bigger screen, more connectors, HDMI, MagSafe power plug, SD card slot, faster M1 Max processor. LeRoy believes it is priced correctly. Thunderbolt 4 is faster than USBC. It appears that Apple has recently been responsive to user comments requesting the reinstatement of ports and MagSafe.
Stephen Richards is very impressed with the M1 start-up speed. Does anyone put their M1 to sleep or just turn it on or off? He is concerned about burning out the SSD. Neil does not believe there is any significant difference either way. The SSD drive should outlast us all. It disadvantageous to defragment a SSD since the internal electronics move things around to maximize life. Laurence believes that it's better to leave the drive powered on so this housekeeping activity can continue.

It's important to upgrade to the latest version of iOS to resolve the recent security scare about iMessage.
Some members who use email services from Bell Canada (addresses ending in Sympatico.ca) are having problems in receiving MUGOO emails. The severity of such problems appears to be getting worse across the entire Bell community. It is recommended that users consider migrating to another platform such as Gmail.
1 - Browsers - security and privacy
This session took a look at the privacy and security features of Apple Safari and two other browsers used by our members. One goal is to reduce the amount of advertising and number of trackers that monitor our web usage.
Safari and Reader View with Laurence Head
Laurence started with providing an overview of Safari 15 Reader View on macOS Big Sur. Reader View appears as an icon in the top-left corner of your Safari search bar, and it reworks your webpage into an organized, ad-free layout to help you focus on just reading the content and viewing any associated pictures.
He used The Globe and Mail web site as an example. If you go to a specific story, you can toggle Reader View on and off. It's a clean user interface with text and pictures. Some sites won't allow Reader View.
Laurence has also enabled Safari to block some website tracking. Tracking is the collection and sharing of information about an individual's activity on the internet — what they do online, and how they go about doing it. This gives companies a fuller understanding of your preferences, allowing them to personalize their content accordingly. Apple can currently block 26 trackers on The Weather Network and 45 trackers on The Weather Channel.
Another way of maintaining privacy is to open a Private Window (no History, cookies or stored information). It's like a new search, totally anonymous.
Safari is also offering extensions such as Content Blockers, Ghostery, DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials. These typically appear on your Safari toolbar and can provide a second line of defence after Apple has done its job.
Overall, Laurence is happy with Safari and the Apple ecosystem ... "drinking the Kool-Aid."
Duck Duck Go Private Browser with Lynda Matsumoto
Many of us have been happily using DuckDuckGo as a tracker free alternative to the Google search engine. Lynda demonstrated that there is also a DuckDuckGo Privacy Browser[/i] app available for iOS and macOS, and as a Safari extension for macOS.

DuckDuckGo is a small Pennsylvania-based company, non profit, funded by angel investors and donations. Their privacy policy is simple: they don't collect or share any of your personal information.
You can download from the App Store and the macOS version can be added as an icon to your dock. It allows everything you can do in Safari including stripping out advertising. You can toggle on a display of how many things have been blocked and who are the trackers and their corresponding web sites. Each site is given a privacy rating.
You can fireproof a website. This means that the website's cookies and local storage won't be cleared when using the "Clear all tabs and data" function (represented by a fire icon, hence fireproof).
The app also allows you to privatize your email. This free forwarding service removes email trackers and protects the privacy of your personal email address without asking you to change email services or apps.
The web site includes an excellent crash course on privacy. Remember, if you are using the "free" Google service, "you" are the product.

Neil likes the Firefox browser because it is platform agnostic and appears the same across all systems.

Mobile browsers typically do not support extensions as opposed to desktop browsers, although iOS 15 now allows Safari extensions. There are now a number of Safari iOS extensions available. DuckDuckGo is not yet one of them.
DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials is also available for Firefox (and for Chrome and Safari). Firefox also supports the blocking of trackers, but keep in mind that some trackers may be essential for a web site to work.
Ghostery is a free and open-source privacy and security-related browser extension and mobile browser application. It uncovers the trackers on each website and empowers you to control the ones you don't want for a cleaner, faster, and safer browsing experience.

Neil demonstrated Firefox and Ghostery on an M1 mac and Firefox on an iPad. With the iPad version there are no extensions but some settings. You don't have the option of adding Ghostery. It still does a reasonably good privacy job. You can also open an Igognito window, which keeps your browser history private. You can tell Firefox itself to block pop-up ads.
You can pause Ghostery and see how many trackers now get through. For example, CBC has 13 trackers with Ghostery, 15 without. CNN has 42 trackers with and 45 without. CCN can detect that you are using an ad blocker ... you can ignore. In some instances, one tracker will load and then initiate the loading of additional trackers.
Firefox also has privacy settings and a find bar. There is an option to clear all cookies and data when the browser is quit.
Neil believes that Safari is still pretty good (perhaps the better option) on an iOS device.

Lynda is trying to get rid of her old, no longer relevant WiFi networks on her modem. Under WiFi networks you can see a list. Neil indicated that you should be able to forget specific networks. Lynda says that the same list appears on every device. She clears them out and they are repopulated. Neil offered to help her out, one on one.
