0 - Group chin-wag while folks log on
Ross is in Melbourne and there was chit chat about the vaccinations underway in Australia.  He is scheduled for his second AZ and flies back to Italy on the 21st.

1 - How many G's do you have -  with Neil Herber (presentation attached below)
Neil had been chatting with a friend who was looking for a new mobile phone but specifically not an iPhone.  It soon became apparent that there is confusion in use of the letter "G" when describing cellular and WiFi network technologies. For cell phones, "G" refers to the generation.  Most of us today are running on LTE, 4th generation.  The next version is 5G but the major vendor Huawei https://carrier.huawei.com/en/Industries-5G has been precluded from offering the infrastructure due to security concerns associated with the Chinese government.  Ericsson https://www.ericsson.com/en/5g is the other big 5G vendor.  5G has not rolled out at the speed they were originally expecting since 4G is still pretty good.
WiFi "G" refers to the frequency band ... 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. One device at 2.4 GHz can still connect to another device on the same router at 5 GHz.  But to confuse things further there is also WiFi 6 ... the next generation based on IEEE standard 802.11ax https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.11.  It's faster and allows beam forming (multiple antennas) that allows aiming the signal at the device, less power for  good reception.  5G cellular also does beam forming.  It will find your phone and send the signal directly to it (which can reveal your location, a concern to security experts).

2 - Gillian's Tech Poll -  with Gillian Villeneuve
To add some variety Gillian, with Neil's assistance, presented a number of questions to the participants using the Zoom poll feature.  This generated some interesting interaction and discussion about the use of apps.  You can see the poll summary in the attachment below.  Most of us will only download apps if they serve a specific purpose and we are generally happy to pay for them.  Also, we tend to rely on independent reviews such as those in Screencasts Online.

3 - Twisting your ARM (Apple Silicon) -  with Neil Herber
Neil purchased his new M1 Macbook Air on April 29th.

The online purchase and curbside pickup at Bayshore were flawless and fast  The store actually called to invite him in earlier than his original appointment.

Things he really likes:
- very responsive, great screen, nice keyboard
- fingerprint reader is surprisingly useful
- has two USB-C ports
- supports rapid charging via USB-C and works with his 3rd party charger
- can run iOS apps (in theory)

Things he hasn't investigated yet:
- new M1 startup modes, see https://mac-fusion.com/m1-based-macs-have-new-startup-modes-heres-what-you-need-to-know/

Things he is not so keen on:
- can't run most emulators - VMWare, Parallels, VirtualBox - because they depend on x64 virtualization hardware which does not exist on the M1
- VMWare and Parallels claim to be working on new versions
- VirtualBox has said nothing
- There IS a virtual machine system called UTM https://eshop.macsales.com/blog/72081-utm-virtual-machine-on-m1-mac/
- even UTM can only run ARM-based operating systems, so it's still not possible to run older versions of MacOS!
- there is a covert comms channel baked into the M1 chip, but it may not be a problem https://www.engadget.com/apple-m1-vulnerability-covert-channel-malware-143216984.html
- no free year of Apple TV+ with new machine, now only get three months of Apple Arcade (meh!)
- can't start machine from an external drive "the old way" it is now complex https://www.macworld.com/article/331916/how-to-start-up-your-m1-mac-from-an-external-drive.html   and https://www.zdnet.com/article/all-storage-fails-how-to-make-a-bootable-backup-for-an-m1-mac/
- backups are more complicated with 3rd party software, see https://bombich.com/kb/ccc5/frequently-asked-questions-about-ccc-and-macos-11  and https://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html  (in Beta)

4 - The new M1 iMac impressions - with LeRoy Lees
LeRoy and his wife are very impressed with their new M1 iMac, so much so that it is now in their living room which never would have happened with the old iMac.  It's elegant and super fast.  You can read LeRoy's presentation notes in the attachment below.

5 - Q & A / Fixit Forum
There were two support queries from MarySue.  She had been seeing some strange HTML coding while using Firefox, which may have been accidentally invoked by activating the Inspector.  Also, a number of features in the most recent version Pages appear to have gone missing.  Ross indicated that they are likely still there but must be activated using a more cumbersome procedure.  MarySue is also looking for an Apple wired USB mouse if anyone has one that they are willing to sell.

6 - Presidential Firewall Chat and sign-off - with Gillian Villeneuve, Wally Kuzmicz
