G'day,

Would an Adaptec SCSI Card (AHA-2930CU MAC) G3/G4 (PCI) work in a G5.

Documentation says G3/G4 compatible.

Could it, would it be G5 compatible as well?

Cheers.

Dan Millar

No, it won't work. Some insight from Adaptecs website:

QuoteThe Adaptec SCSI Card 2906 (AVA-2906) and Adaptec PowerDomain 2930 (APD-2930, APD-2930C, APD-2930CU, AHA-2930CU) are 5 V PCI cards and will not fit into the PCI or PCI-X slots in the Apple Power Mac G5 or Xserve G5 according to page 24 of Apple's Power Mac G5 Developer documentation. Due to this hardware incompatibility, the 2906 and 2930 will not function in these systems. Adaptec has no acceptable replacement at this time.

The Adaptec PowerDomain 29160N (APD-29160N), PowerDomain 29160 (APD-29160) and PowerDomain 39160 (APD-39160) are Universally keyed and will fit into either 5 V or 3.3 V PCI slots, so these cards will fit into PCI or PCI-X slot but have only been tested minimally in the Power Mac G5 and not at all in the Xserve G5. No new issues have been seen with the Power Mac G5.

Note: The Power Mac G5 models M9590LL, M9591LL, M9592LL* have PCI Express (PCIe) expansion slots instead of PCI or PCI-X slots. None of the SCSI Cards listed will fit into those slots. Adaptec has no Apple compatible PCI Express SCSI Card at this time.
* These represent the last Power Mac G5 models - late 2005.

Keep your G4 running!

Happy Mac'ing!

Oh, one more thing...

You could get a 29160 for your G5...

Used ones are cheap, ~$50-60, new ones go for ~$180.

I use one in my to keep my old Epson 636 scanner and SilverScan software going - can't find a USB equipped scanner that can touch it for quality or speed. I dread the day the bulb dies...
