Number icons on Mail have become flat and squished

The number icons that show the number of messages in the sidebar next to the mailboxes have become flat and squished. Nothing has changed on my Dual 2 GHz G5 running Mac OS X 10.4.11. I want my nice, lickable icons back! How can I fix it? Thanks in advance.
