This forum looks like a mostly buy-sell place. I tried the MUGOO mailing list archive, which says it isn't working.
Is there a good english-language mailing list or forum for Mac-newbie howto and technical questions?

I bought an old iBook with Panther on it, from a co-worker who upgraded, so I've configured my Linux box
to be an IMAP server, and wanted to use the iBook for browsing, mail, etc.  The first account that I set up in
Mail was  for POP protocol, directed to my ISP, just to verify that my Mac and network stuff was working. No problem.

Then, I verified (by telnet) that the IMAP server on the Linux box was working. So I allowed the LInux
box to download a few dozen e-mails from the ISP, to populate the IMAP server. The final step was [to be]
changing the Mail account on the iBook to IMAP and point it at the IMAP server on the Linux box. There's my problem.

I opened Mail and went to Preferences > Accounts, and there was a page to modify parameters,
except "Type   POP" which did not have an option to change.  Well, maybe it'll change itself if I
change some other parameters.....  save.... nope.  I don't know if that's just a label or a real
account parameter, but it stubbornly remains "POP".   So I decided to just remove/delete that Mail
account and create a new IMAP one.  Imagine my surprise when I could find no way to do it.

I googled to the apple site and found howto (for Panther) that said I just needed to go into:
Mail > Preferences > Accounts > and select the account and click "Remove".  Fine, except
there's no "Remove" to click.

After much fuming, it occurred to me that my personal account might have limitations on
it to prevent such elementary change, so I maybe I need to do it as "root" or to at least
give my personal account more permissions or something.  Question is how/where?

If this is not the type of question to ask here, could some kind soul point me to the right
venue? Or to the right documentation (the Mac "Help" ain't it).

Thanks,

Kevin (newly Mac-ified in Barr-BQ-haven, and not up to speed yet)
