HP LaserJet 1320n Problem

I have a HP LaserJet 1320n printer

connected to my iMac G5   SS 10.5.3  (Leopard)

and it is painfully slow when it does print and sometimes it will not print at all. I have tried downloading a new driver and when I do it takes a very long time to install - perhaps an hour or more - and when it does the printer does not work any better. The printer is one year old.  I can't find help on any HP site.

I did reinstall the software that came with the printer before I tried to download the above mentioned driver.

I would appreciate instructions as to how to improve this situation.

Thanks

How is it connected - wired or wireless or ... ?

Wired via ethernet?

Was the printer okay with 10.4?

When you UG'd to 10.5, did it work okay WITHOUT installing anything?

If you UG'd to Leopard and your printer didn't work/wasn't supported, then installed a 10.4 driver for your 1320n - is that when your problems began? This is a known issue with 10.5. The drivers on the site now are for 10.5, but they may not be the ones you downloaded. Un-installing the 10.4 driver is not always possible, in which case, the only painful solution is to re-install 10.5.

Let me know if any of this is helpful.

Thanks for your help.  The printer will now print both graphics and text and does a beautiful job if I am just asking it to do a page or two but with heavier documents it just throws up its little hands and refuses to do anything.

After re-reading your initial posting, it does sound like you're in the scenario I described as most dire - you installed pre 10.5-drivers into 10.5, then tried to install the proper 10.5 drivers. This is a known, though unadmitted problem with Leopard - the only solution I know of is to re-install the OS (do an "archive & install" with the "preserve users and network settings" option turned on. You'll then need to run Software Update afterwards, before finally installing the OS X 10.5 drivers from HP's website.

That's a lot of work just to fix an occasional printing error, so you may want to just leave it as is - especially since there's no guarantee that your problem will be solved. The problem may be HPs USB "backend" - notorious for being slow on Macs... and maybe their next revision will fix your problem.

Happy Mac'ing
