Thius is my new laptop powerbook, its the black one with a ram upgrade to 2 gigs. Ill post the system info below if it helps,

I am having a really strange issue with the kayboard and since people tell me we cant get viruses, i thought maybe someone here could help answer a few questions for me. its like my NUMlick is perminently activated, but its not lit up, nor does it toggle hen i press it. infact theDELETE key, most of the F keys and the u, i, o, p, j, k,lm and others only type out numbers unless i use a usb keyboard from my other mac. it seems to be working right now though but i a few hours itll do it again and i do not knjow how to fix it nor does any google searching help. i changed my password to make sure it doesnt use those keys at all, because last time i couldnt access my password correctly.
The last time it happened the letters "F and N" were on my desktop and wouldnt allow me to trash them. is this common and can i make it go away>?

SOlutions so far i have tried:

I RE-installed all the OSX stuff from the support discs that came with it, which worked, btu it came back a few days later.

is it possible that watching divx files on stage6.divx.com, or watching TV shows online on sidereel.com can do this?

Three things to ponder.

First - Which version of OS X? 10.4.7 or later contains a keyboard fix that Apple released just for Intel-powered portables that was also released independently as Apple Keyboard Update 1.0 - http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/applekeyboardupdate10.html
Be sure to run Software Update if you haven't already done so.

Second - are you pressing the command-space key combination while you're visiting either of the websites you mentioned - or ever? If your Mac has more than one type of "input method" (read "keyboard") checked in System Preferences->International, command-space or command-option-space causes the keyboard encoding to switch to the previous/next keyboard. This cause some very strange behaviour if you in fact only have one keyboard - something like what you are describing.

On the other hand, it also sounds like your keyboard may be f@#$%d - anything spill in your keyboard lately - or before you bought it? Hey it's a brand new Apple - take it to the dealer, this kind of thing is totally covered by your warranty.

Bon chance,

Dan

Okay - four things - the fourth thing is to update your firmware after you upgrade to at least 10.4.8- you should have SMC version # 1.4f12, but your profile says you have SMC version #1.17f0. Do this after upgrading the OS, but before doing any hardware diagnostics.

hey,
I did some kind of firmware update this weekend, where i had to turn it off and hold the power key for 5 econds until a long beep was sounded. then it upgrade my firmware ont he intel chips/

is this the same upgrade you meant? if so then yes. i have done it.

im going ot check for more updates now. thanks guys

Okay, from the profile you gave:

Boot ROM Version:   MB21.00A5.B07
SMC Version:   1.17f0

So, according to the Apple Support web site your BootROM is up to date, but your SMC firmware is not:

"After this update has completed successfully, your SMC Version will be: 1.4f12"

This note also from the Apple web site:

"If your MacBook is running Mac OS X 10.4.6, you won't be able to install the SMC Update until you update to Mac OS X 10.4.8."

Check your profile again to see if the SMC needs updating. After it is updated, you can move on to the next step. Did you check your International Preferences to see if you are inadvertently switching keyboard layouts?

Good luck

Dan
