I have added an external hard drive to my computer to free space so I set up itunes to send all downloads to the external drive. My question is how do I transfer the songs that I had downloaded before installing the external drive?

Hi TiLepre,

I'm sorry can't answer your question based on personal experience, as I haven't had occasion to move my music files from their original location on my laptop's internal drive.

However, I'm wondering if  the lack of response to your posting might be due to the answer depending on a couple of details not mentioned:
  1) how did you repoint iTunes to use a directory on your external hard drive?
  2) do the songs remaining on your internal drive that you wish to move to your external hard drive have DRM (digital rights management) on them (e.g. are they from the iTunes store)?

The  reason for the 1st question, is that if, for example, you had moved your music directory to your external disk and left an alias to it in your home directory, then you wouldn't be asking how to move your earlier songs, since you would have already moved them. So I'm assuming you followed a different procedure, the details of which might help someone more knowledgeable than I to answer your question.

The reason for the 2nd question, is that if the 'earlier songs' have no DRM on them, then you could, if it came to it, just re-import them into iTunes by dragging them onto the iTunes application icon in the Finder.

Does my speculation and do these questions make any sense?
