Neither my PERFORMA nor 7600(G3) will mount CD-RW... why?

I am not on the Internet but decided to upgrade my software by dowloading the updates to a CD-RW (at the Ottawa Public Library).

When I got home, neither the CD-RW with the updates nor a "fresh" one out of the box would load/mount (they both were ejected actually).

I have:

A) PERFORMA PowerPC 5200 CD, running MAC OS 8.6

B) MAC PowerPC 7600/120 (with G3 upgrade), running MAC OS 9.1

Do I need to upgrade my software or is it a hardware problem.

Both CD drives mount CD-R disks.

Thanks in advance,

jp

I presume that the library machine was a PC. I am willing to bet that you used something like "InCD" to create the CD. This is an application that allows you to drag and drop files onto a CD image and it then burns the CD.

Unfortunately, InCD is notorious for producing CDs that cannot be read on other machines (of any flavour) and the first thing I do when finding it on a client's machine is to remove it and explain why.

You need to use something like EasyCD Creator or Nero (both $$) or CDBurnerXP Pro (free) http://www.cdburnerxp.se/features.php

The other possible problem is that neither OS 8 or 9 can read ISO CDs without help. Check out the Joliet File System for Mac OS 7-9
http://www.tempel.org/joliet/ - that may be the only problem.

Neil,

Thanks for the Info on Joliet.  I downloaded (on 1.4MB diskettes) the Freeware version and 2 Shareware versions and tried each one - one by one and ... no joy.

The problem is that the disk doesn't even load/mount - the CD drive door opens up after a few seconds - ejecting the CD.

What does load/mount on to the desktop:

-Mac OS CDs (from Performa CD to Mac OS 8.5);
-AppleWorks 6 CD;
-music CDs (of various kinds)
-CD-R "CURSOR Colorful, Extreme Speed" (purple label) - 700MB/80 minutes

What doesn't mount to the desktop (fresh out of the box, before anything is "burned" on them)

- CD-RW: "Verbatim", 2X - 4X, 80 min/ 700 MB

- CD-R: "Samsung Pleomax", 52X; 80 min/ 700 MB

Is it that only certain brands of CD-R or CD-RW (hopefully) will work on older machines like the Performa 5200CD or a 7600 with a G3 upgrade?
