WTP: USB1.1 PCMCIA card

Hello,

My sister has an older Powerbook G3, and received at Christmas a nice new USB printer.  Although she made sure to have the donor check that it was compatible with her OS version, her G3 has no USB ports.  So off I went to find her a USB card.

Except it took only a few phone calls to local stores to find out that all current PCMCIA USB port cards are USB 2.0 and every single one of them are incompatible with her OS version.  (I noted which it was, but can't find it at the moment.)  So they directed me to this place.

She would be fine with a USB1.1 PCMCIA card, but all local stores don't have any in stock.

Does anyone have a used one, or know where I could find one?  Montreal and Toronto stores/users would be quite feasible for pickup too...

Thanks!

Niall

What version of mac OS is she running?

Niall

She has OS 9.2, and her G3 is a Wallstreet.

Go to  http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=31132#English
You will want to scroll down to read the readme file.  It will assist in choosing a compatible card.
Download and install 694 k software file.
Let the printing begin!

Um, thank you, but those notes indicate not to use it on 9.2 to begin with.

And the main problem with current USB adapter cards found in stores is that they are all USB 2.0, and the very few that say they work with Macs all say that OSX is needed.

I have verified that there should be no problems with a USB 1.1 adapter card, but no one seems to sell these.  Which is why I went to this place...

This is as cheap as it gets.  http://www.byterunner.com/cgi-bin/cart.cgi?store=byterunner&category=PCMCIA+USB+and+Firewire+Cards
$15.49 USD
Yes, I know it says 2.0; but it will only work as 1.1 under OS 9.2 with previously mentioned software installed.  The section of the readme file you are concerned about is a warning not to install the software on a machine that already has a built-in USB adapter card as the built-in USB adapter card may cease to work.   It is OHCI-compliant, that is what is important.
When you get to the above website click on "here" text to see your sister's computer listed as compatible.
Her PowerBook is capable of running OS 10.1 to OS 10.2.8 at which time this card can be used with 2.0 devices.
Let the printing begin again!
