Linda is planning to purchase a new iPad which will display sheet music for her choral singing. She inquired about the pros and cons of the newer iPad laminated display. This query could not be answered during the meeting. Overall, the laminated display will have better image quality, although this could be subtle, at a greater cost to purchase and repair. It is particularly recommended if you want to read outdoors or use the Apple Pencil.

At the MUGOO meeting last June, David had presented an overview of new iOS 15 features that were announced at the World Wide Developers Conference, for release in the fall of 2021. Now that the capabilities have been available for a while, we thought it would be interesting to hear member feedback, using that presentation as a checklist.
David opened with the comment that at this stage of his more elderly life, he is no longer an early adopter, and has not tried much on this list. But in reviewing again, there certainly are some interesting features.
The new Facetime features included SharePlay to watch/listen to streaming media together, Share Screen (similar to Zoom), Spatial Audio, new microphone modes, arranging videos in portrait or grid mode (similar to Zoom), scheduling calls with FaceTime links (again, similar to Zoom). Most of the meeting participants had not tried these features, and a comment was made "if you look at the age of faces in the images, that's the audience for this technology ... and it's not us."
Jamie has used FaceTime quite frequently with a range of people, and the spatial audio ended up being a really interesting add-on. The newer iPad and macbook devices have multiple speakers and the spatial sound separation is really quite remarkable, for both voices and music. It definitely enhances the call experience if you feel the sound is coming from the person who is actually speaking on your screen. If there are several people in one of the locations at the other end, you can even sense sound movement back and forth withing that group. Airpods 2 and 3 also support spatial audio.
David then stepped through the more recent iOS 15 features related to messages. Most meeting participants have not tried these and fortunately are no longer at the time in their life where they have to be plugged in for 18 to 24 hours each day.
The new features in Apple Maps were then reviewed. Jamie indicated that he still prefers Apple Maps over Google Maps for most things. Apple Maps is integrated as part of Apple CarPlay, which while still a bit clunky is being visually improved in the fall. LeRoy finds it convenient to have an appointment and address in his calendar, so that navigation directions are activated in CarPlay as soon as he sits in his car. Pretty amazing.
With iOS 15 photos, Wally really likes the Memories automated collage capability which is synchronized to music. The new text recognition and subject matter recognition is now available in photos or when using the camera. Linda took a photograph of a leaf and it could identify the type of tree. Automatic language translation can also be very helpful, especially when traveling in foreign countries.
Not all features are available on all Apple hardware. You can download current iPad and iPhone User Guides from Apple Books for free and the hardware distinctions are outlined at the beginning of each manual

Several meeting participants are using the Apple Health app, which will work by itself on an iPhone and can be further enhanced with iWatch. You can show the tracking results to you doctor.
With regard to privacy, Hide My Email generates unique, random email addresses that automatically forward to your personal inbox. You can read and respond directly to emails sent to these addresses and your personal email address is kept private. If you create an account with an app or visit a website that supports Sign in with Apple, you can hide your email address, if you'd prefer more privacy. With an iCloud+ subscription, you can generate unique, random addresses from your iOS 15 or later device any email field in Safari.
Your Driver's License in Apple Wallet will be recognized by Police in some provinces and states, but not yet in Ontario. Apple Pay is more secure that using a credit card since the vendor cannot obtain any personal information about you.
2 - Group discussion of in-person vs Zoom vs hybrid
iMeetings in the fall
The MUGOO Exec is considering how best to resume our monthly meetings in the fall. Do we revert back to in-person gatherings at the Nepean Public Library, continue with Zoom or try some hybrid arrangement ... recognizing this last option could pose technical challenges. Gillian polled each meeting participant for their thoughts and comments, which are listed here in no particular order:
- The meeting room cost per night at the library is believed be $70, to be confirmed.
- Many would prefer the resumption of in-person meetings because they enjoy the personal interaction.
- Zoom is preferred by those who find it cumbersome getting the library by bus or who prefer not to drive in from out of town.
- Consider Zoom for bad weather days "when there is snow."
- Some simply prefer the convenience of staying home.
- Some like the fact that people can present or attend from anywhere in the world, which may attract a younger crowd.
- Consider fall and spring meetings in-person, and winter meetings by Zoom (a different form of hybrid).
- One member likes Zoom in the winter, but prefers the social aspect of in-person, could go with either, the important thing is to continue the meetings.
- The Secretary likes Zoom for the aids in preparing minutes (meeting participants, live transcript, presentation decks).
- Betwixt and between, easy nature of remote access, misses the social interaction.
- Favours in-person, some of our members are far away, we would lose those participants and presenters.
- Easy either way, to do hybrid properly would be hard, but hybrid if well done would be attractive.
- A proper hybrid setup would have a phone camera at the back, microphone used by whoever is talking, share whatever is going up on the screen, someone would have to monitor the Zoom feed.
- The Southminster Doors Open for Music works well (live streaming, excellent audio quality, different camera angles, and also with an in-person audience).
- Try the September and October meetings in person. Zoom over the winter.
- Plan for in-person, Zoom can be the fallback.
As a next step, Wally will check if the library room is available and then convene a meeting of the MUGOO executive in July. We will advise the membership of our plan for September.

Our meeting attendance was reduced as some of our members are still(!) without power following the severe Derecho storm on May 21st. During the initial chin-wag we shared stories caused by the disruption:
- using a whole home power generator to keep things going during the outage
- neighbour's tree fell down and hit the corner of our house, punched a hole in the roof so we are now having to deal with the insurance company
- arborist removing a tree trunk over the top of a house using a crane
- the disorientation of being awakened in the middle of the night when the power finally does come on, racing around the house turning off lights and addressing beeping sounds, plugging in the electric car
- cleaning out two inches of water in the freezer
- using a plug-hybrid to AC power our coffee maker and fridges/freezers
1 - Duck Duck Go Privacy Browser

Lynda presented an overview and demo of the increasingly popular privacy browser. DuckDuckGo (DDG) is an internet search engine that emphasizes protecting user privacy and avoiding the filter bubble of personalized search results. The quixotic name was apparently derived from the children's game Duck Duck Goose. Their selling proposition is 1) We don't store your personal information. Ever. 2) We don't follow you around with ads. 3) We don't track you in or out of private browsing mode. There are now threes ways of accessing the privacy features 1) as a privacy enhancement extension to Safari 2) as a stand-alone privacy browser on iOS 3) as a stand-alone privacy browser on macOS (currently in beta trial mode). During her demo, Lynda showed how to use the features of the iOS privacy browser and the various option settings. The browser letter grades each of the sites you visit in terms of privacy intrusions, level of encrpytion, and lists all of the trackers that have been blocked. The most compelling visual feature is the ability to individually or entirely delete your tracking history using the "inferno" button. Like Safari, the browser allows you to block ads, keep track of your browsing history and add a widget to your home screen.

2 - Where do we go for tips and
instructions? - David Rhynas, group discussion
Our next group discussion was where we go for tips and help in using our various Apple devices. David led off by screen sharing his iPad. Some of these sources and tips you may already know but perhaps not, and they are all quite helpful.
In Apple books, you can search for iPhone User Guide and iPhone User Guide. These are free, comprehensive, well indexed user manuals of the latest iOS releae. They are both in excess of 1,000 pages but you can easily skip to whatever topic you may be interested in.
Apple Tips is something you may have looked at at the beginning but it's worth revisiting on a regular basis, since tips are periodically updated for each new iOS release. David demonstrated several Siri tips:
- personalizing Siri's voice
- starting a Facetime call
- what's my update to get weather, calendar events, reminders and news
- open an app
He also showed how reveal the exact time stamp for iMessages and how to play calming background sounds by choosing Hearing in Control Centre.

SonicFire Pro 6 is the current version of a program, first introduced in 1996, that allows you to customize a music track that will accompany and enhance your video or media project. Most of us lack either the resources or ability to add customized scoring to our projects. This program was designed to bridge the gap between licensing music and paying royalty fees, or having it specially produced for you.
Like Apple, you are buying into an environment. It relies on audio clips that they sell as part of virtual albums, 10 to 14 pieces on various themes. There is a track of the month and album of the month sold at a discount. The purpose is to produce music royalty free for presentations and movies, in an editable format. Through Smartsound Plug-ins, the platform provides support for Adobe CC, Final Cut Pro X, Sony Vegas Pro and Avid Media Composer.
Ross demonstrated some of the many features and stepped through the process to customize music, paying attention to mood, rhythm, transitions and timing so that the audio is precisely aligned with the video. It is a powerful Mac cleaner, speed booster, and health guard, designed to help your machine run at full throttle again, remove large and old files, uninstall apps, and delete useless data that wastes disk space. The program will run on macOS 10.10 and higher. An older version CleanMyMac 3 supports macOS 10.9 - 10.14. CleanMyMac Classic is compatible with macOS versions 10.4 to 10.8. Marc noted that Monterey doesn't support motion JPEG; he recently had to purchase a new webcam.
Yesterday at Tabaret Hall, Laurence attended the Canadian premiere of a new Philip Glass composition: Annunciation Piano Quintet.
There was brief discussion regarding the unsettling events in Ukraine, and the significant amount of misinformation. Marc recommended doing a Google reverse image search for any questionable visual material; simply drag and drop the photos in question. Some of what you see "coming from Ukraine" is bogus.
Graham initially had difficulty invoking his Zoom share screen. With macOS 10.15 Catalina and later, you must first allow Zoom access to screen recording. Select the Security & Privacy option under System Preferences, click the Privacy tab, scroll down to Screen Recording, and finally check the option for zoom.us.
1 - Opus One ... a multi-featured daily planner with Graham Fawcett
Gillian introduced our speaker and indicated that she has been using the program, finding it visually compelling.
Graham had been seeking a good daily planner, with a means of keeping copious notes from Zoom meetings and tracking activities. He has used a variety of programs including Apple Calendar, Apple Contacts, BusyCal, and a variety of word processors. Apple Notes is quite effective. EverNote is another good one but a bit expensive. He wanted a stand-alone app on his desktop that would combine all of these capabilities.
Graham initially tried Opus Domini 1.7, the precursor to Opus One, which was ok but not yet fully functional. He has now settled on Opus One. This app originally came out in 2017 and is now much enhanced at Version 2.1.3.
Opus One is visually and functionally based on a familiar Day-Timer model, the paper based daily calendar system. However, it would be better described as a "Day-Timer on Steroids." It includes a calendar page for each day, task lists, events, comprehensive searchable notes, growth tools, and backup/sync to iCloud. https://www.piso13.com/products The app is available for macOS, iOS and watchOS, and Windows.

There was some discussion as to when we might be resuming in-person meetings at the library, and whether these meetings would also allow Zoom participation. For example, Wally lives an hour and forty minutes away, so Zoom would be a convenient option. How could we do hybrid meetings? Would there be a dual screen setup, one for the presenter and one for the remote participants? The library is still undecided as to when it might resume renting rooms. Also, the library currently restricts bandwidth to individual users which could pose a problem for Zoom.
Wally had a query. He observed that his backup spinning hard drive was in HFS+ format yet his main SSD drive was in APFS. Marc pointed out that APFS won't work reliably on a spinning drive.

For example, Wally lives an hour and forty minutes away, so Zoom would be a convenient option. How could we do hybrid meetings? Would there be a dual screen setup, one for the presenter and one for the remote participants? The library is still undecided as to when it might resume renting rooms. Also, the library currently restricts bandwidth to individual users which could pose a problem for Zoom.
Wally had a query. He observed that his backup spinning hard drive was in HFS+ format yet his main SSD drive was in APFS. Marc pointed out that APFS won't work reliably on a spinning drive.
