Can an Airport Card from a Base Station Work in an iMac?

I was just reading an old post where the fellow mentions that the card in an old Airport Base Station (802.11b) can be pulled and used in an iBook.  If this is true, can this card also work in a flat-panel iMac (the lamp version)?

My recollection is that the original Airport basestation used a Lucent PCMCIA wireless card, which would mean you could dissemble it to retrieve a Lucent wireless card useable in a laptop that had a PCMCIA slot. But unfortunately, the lamp-iMac doesn't have a PCMCIA slot externally. And my _guess_ would be that it doesn't have a PCMCIA connector 'internally' either.

PS. Apart from the Apple airport card designed for internal use on that iMac, there are 3rd-party wireless-to-Ethernet adapters that can make any ethernet-equipped computer, wireless.

There are also cheap USB wireless gizmos. Some look like memory sticks. Not sure if OS X has drivers for them or if they come with the needed drivers. Here is one example:
