Does anyone here have a problem with Safari and staying "signed in" at websites

I am asking this on behalf of someone whom I convinced to switch from Windows to a Mac. They are generally pleased EXCEPT for some reason, using Safari they are constantly having to sign in to their account, even in the middle of transactions at eBay specifically...which is really pissing them off. They are NOT getting any useful answers from eBay's tech support either.

Has anyone encountered such a problem either at eBay or any similar problem at other websites? Does anyone have a suggested fix? They tried Firefox and it doesn't seem to do it but i would like to know why Safari has a problem and if there is a fix.

They do click on the "remember me" checkbox or whatever it is on the website itself, that should keep them signed in or recognised in the future. They have cookies enabled, they tried clearing the cache, yadda yadda yadda, but they are missing something OR Safari is not entirely compatable. Any help would be appreciated. They are new to the Mac experience but this is enough to ruin it for them as they LIVE on eBay.

Nope, I don't have a problem while on Ebay and I go there quite a bit. Don't have any answers about why your friend has this happening though, mostly cause I'm still new at that myself. Might be something very simple like a timeout of somesorts.
Go to ehMac and ask there. Maybe someone there knows...
Apple tech support online maybe?

Hi righthandman,

I'm not having any difficulties with being over-prompted for website passwords by Safari, so I can't speak from personal experience. I wonder if the problem may have been that the eBay userid and/or password was recently changed and the Mac's keychain has old info?  If that were the case here's something that you could try:

  • Open KeyChain Access located in /Applications/Utilities and see if there is any entry for the eBay website.
  • If there is, then delete that eBay entry and quit KeyChain Access.
  • Then login to the eBay account using Safari.

best of luck,
...ben
