Pop up ads

How do I get rid of unwanted pop up ads on Safari, Firefox and Chrome?  When I am browsing they keep popping up with either annoying ads for 'security' apps or an "ask" search engine. I have OS X Yosemite on my iMac.

for the last week I have gotten dubious downloads, most carried by Follysway. Today I got an offer from them to remove Follysway via a compressed app...it says it will clean...blah blah blah including my browser toolbar.
I'm not giving them that pleasure for fear of where it may lead.

For getting rid of ads I would strongly suggest Ad Block Plus. It is a plug in available for almost all browsers and works very well.

Be SURE to read the setup instructions so that you understand what you are blocking.
