The new look is just a side benefit of the version 2 SMF software. The biggest advantage is improved spambot control, as you mentioned.

For most of June 2011, we have had an average of 25 attempted registrations per day that got past the old spam controls (I didn't count the ones that were defeated!), which then meant I had to go in and zap them by hand. Not a pleasant task after a week away ...

The new system has some features that should defeat any robot - human spammers and real potential members can still register by jumping through a few extra hoops.

I feel for you, I had a couple of systems running different BB systems, not SMF, but they had so many problems with registration, we had to shut them down. I'm not sure if there is any way to defeat those 'bots, if there is I could not find it -so good luck!
