recovering a stolen Mac?

Hello:

I have a rather odd question, and I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar experience.

My Mac laptop was stolen, in Montreal, 2.5 years ago. At the time, i filed a police report in Montreal, and notifed Apple.

Just recently, it came to my attention that someone has registered my old computer with Apple, so there is a chance to recover it.

However, Apple tells me they will not take any action unless contacted by law enforcement officials.

My brief encounter with the Montreal police system was not promising - but I felt that I was only dealing with front-line staff who really didn't quite get what I was talking about.
I am getting some signals that my case may be a lost one, due to the way the police bureacracy/legal system works...but then again, everyone with whom I have spoken has never encountered this situation before.

Is there anyone with any experience in recovering a stolen laptop? Would you recommend using a lawyer or some kind of broker to help me navigate this system? Am I just out of luck?
