No. First, CD and DVD are completely different physical formats, developed by different companies. DVD players can usually read CDs. CD players cannot read DVDs. DVD discs require different laser technology.

In other words, a DVD can never be a "regular music CD".

There are only three ways to put audio on a DVD to be played in a DVD player:
1. in the VIDEO_TS directory, encoded as video
2. in the AUDIO_TS directory, encoded as DVD-Audio
3. in the root of the disc, as MP3s

The DVD specification requires that a VIDEO_TS and an AUDIO_TS directory be present for DVD Video. DVD Audio requires the AUDIO_TS directory. The theoretical quality of a DVD Audio disc is much higher than the quality of an audio CD, but an audio CD is good enough for most people. (Audiophiles are never satisfied.)

An audio CD uses an index to point to "hidden" WAV/PCM tracks. The index entries are the "CDA" files that you would see if you looked at the tracks on an audio CD.

There is no way to create the audio CD format on a DVD. If there were, then DVD players would have to be programmed to understand "DVD data masquerading as audio CD".

3) is not an option for anyone who likes to listen to good quality sound. If you have the tracks on CD, why should you have to compromise the quality of what you listen to? (I personally don't understand why people actually pay MONEY for lossy-encoded, poor-quality recordings.)

It would be cool if it were possible to burn WAV/PCM files to DVD and play them. You could put about seven CDs worth of music on on DVD. However, there is no DVD player that will play a DVD with WAV/PCM files on the disc. If you find one, let me know.

There is software that will burn six or seven CDs onto a DVD as DVD video or DVD audio. The software creates a DVD menu for the tracks, which you navigate as "chapters". It's a poor compromise.

The best option for music lovers is to encode their music as FLAC and store it on a large hard disc. You can play it from any computer as well as from many good portable audio devices (IHP-120, Cowon iAudio, for example). Connect your computer or portable audio player to an amplifier or to an FM transmitter. If you use a transmitter, you'll have music throughout your house and it won't be a proprietary solution.

Use your DVD discs for back-up. Backing up is very important and the odds are that you don't do it enough. :^)
