mouse scrolling

Could someone tell me how to "reprogram" my mouse so that the button can once again be used to scroll up and down ?

This worked fine until I reprogrammed the left and right button and added something to the "squeezeable" side touches.  I've gone to Preferences and tried about all there is there to see if that would work but alas, zilch so far.

So what kind of mouse are we talking about?  Be specific about make and model.

I have a mouse which came with my iMac G5Mighty Mouse.

Try running Applejack.  It did wonders for me and others (read reviews).
