tutorial for iPhoto or alternative

I'm posting this for a Mac owner who would like some tutoring to achieve certain effects with photographs, particularly setting up two in parallel.  I have directed her to screencasts online.  It isn't to change them, but to compare.  You could come to an agreement with her about it.  Please let me know if anyone can do this.  Thanks.
