showing up in the finder

I'm running 10.6.7 on a MacBook and in the past few months, when I go to the level of my hard drive the first thing that shows up is an empty nothing.  They accumulate until I put them to Trash, and then after a bit start to accumulate again.  There is an icon and nothing else.  They are all 4KB, and I see that 4 have what look like dates as titles, but they're not dates since one is 15--00--53.  They started in mid March I believe and don't appear to be a problem, but definitely odd.  Any thoughts?
