Countdown to the next version iPhone ...June 8th

Apple does not pre-announce products. However the next big Apple event is the World Wide Developer Conference which begins Monday, June 8th.

Since Apple has begun telling iPhone developers all new iPhone app submissions must be compatible with version 3.0beta of the iPhone OS, it's widely anticipated that Apple will use the WWDC keynote on Monday AM to announce

• availability of iPhone 3.0 OS
• new iPhone handsets with increased performance and memory.

John Gruber of daringfireball.net fame speculates on the impact a faster processor would have on iPhone usability in his May 21 posting, The Next iPhone.
