Performa 6400, Freezes on Desktop or Startup OS 8.6 screen

hey guys,

well, ive been collecting macs since i was 8 years old (19 now) and these to me are the best out there.  since i was young id take apart the old ones and figure out how they worked and all that.  pretty neat machines!! nothing i couldnt fix back then but now im getting into more complex problems, so hopefully someone can help me out there!!!

anyways, i picked up a nice mint looking Performa 6400 yesterday for free :-) and when i got it home, lacking apple monitors :-S, i connected it to my Apple Presentation System, and got the computer up and running and all that, but the first time i booted it, it got to the desktop and froze!! so i started it back, being stubborn and having a dead PRAM, i reset it on the motherboard, and put a new HD in it, so i boot off OS 8.0 CD and got to the desktop, initialized the new HD and got to the setup, the setup started nicely, smoothly, it thought everything was fine when, it froze again, cursor and all, just like last time!!!!

now, i put the old HD back in and when i get it booted to the OS 8.6 startup screen it freezes!!

i emailed someone and he told me to try the ram seperatly, and to pull the cache, did that and still freezes!!!

hope someone can help me out there!!
