The first patch for OS X 10.6, OS X10.6.1 is now downloadable via Software Update or http://support.apple.com/kb/DL930

I Had no problems installing on a 2008-era MacBook Pro. I was pleasantly surprised to see this first update on OS X 10.6 released just two weeks after launch, but Tidbits.com reports 2-weeks as being typical.

This relatively small update (<~70MB) addresses these issues according to Apple Knowledgebase HT3810:

  • Improves compatibility with some Sierra Wireless 3G modems
  • Addresses an issue in which some printer compatibility drivers might not appear properly in the Add Printer browser
  • Addresses an issue that might cause DVD playback to stop unexpectedly
  • Addresses an issue that might make it difficult to remove an item from the Dock
  • Resolves an issue in which the Command-Option-T keyboard shortcut would sometimes bring up the special characters menu in applications such as Mail and TextEdit
  • Addresses instances in which auto account setup in Mail might not work
  • Resolves issues when sending mail with certain SMTP servers
  • Addresses an issue in which Motion 4 could become unresponsive
  • Includes an update to Adobe Flash Player plug-in version 10.0.32.18

In the past, I had given advice re: OS X 10.6 as:  Early-Adopter? Go for it. Everyone else, wait for OS X 10.6.1.
But with OS X 10.6.1 out after a mere two weeks, I think I may need to amend that to: Everyone else, wait for OS X 10.6.2.

I'd second that.  Not only did I have the printer problem I mentioned earlier following the installation of Snow Leopard, and a few other little ones like the email sending having to be reset to avoid putting in the password, but today I tried to use the PC laptop to connect to the internet via the Apple network, and, lo and behold, that is also now malfunctioning [no changes done to the PC.]  Yes, definitely wait.  There's no way I now want to test an "upgrade" that might change even more functions that did work until then.  Apple store gave me the software, but that can not possibly pay for the needed new scanner, and now printer, and likely a techie to redo the networking.  A Bell employee had come to my house to do that already, and should not have to again.  I might have to pay this time ...and all for an Apple OS upgrade?

This is not a rant; I don't do that ...to old and too much experience.  It is to advise others to wait until they see all the ducks in a row.  I'll post just one more question in the hope of gaining a partial solution.
