Hi all,

Here's a blast from the past! I have a PowerBook 180, and an old (read ancient!) copy of PageMaker 3.0. The install proceeds normally until just at the end. I get a message that the Pagemaker file is being (joined, completed, etc., sorry, I can't remember at the moment). It completes successfully it says, but the install program freezes at that point. When I reboot, it shows PageMaker Pt1 and Pt2 in the folder, so the join never really completed. I have tried with all extensions off as well, but no go. Any ideas? C'mon, somewhere in the back of those brains, back in the real dusty areas, someone may remember the solution... I hope!

Gotta ask a few questions. What version of Mac OS is it? Are you installing from floppies? Did you try copying the PM floppies to the HD and then installing? I'll have to dig out my old PM disks and see what's up. Wow, pretty dusty in here!

Happy Mac'ing

MacOS is 7.5.1, and yes, I tried to install from floppies.  I didn't try copying the floppies to the HD and installing from there, will try that later tonight. Thanks for the suggestion!

Earlier, I tried copying the files from the floppies to the HD and installing from there, but unfortunately, it is not possible to do this. The install must be made from floppies. Oh well, Excedrin #4, lol!

MacMoore

Make a disk image of each of the floppies onto your desktop.
Rename the images to be exactly the same as the names of the floppies you created them from.
Open the first disk image to see the contents and leave it open.
Open the second disk image to see the contents.  Drag and Drop the all the contents of the second disk image into the first disk image window.
Do the same with any additional disk images you have created.
Now you are ready to double-click the installer file in the first disk image which now contains all the files necessary for a full installation without being asked to insert another disk.

Good luck!

Well, if the floppies copied to your HD okay, then you know the disks are still good - amazing! MacMoores got the right idea - you need to make disk images (.img)of each disk. I don't recognize the technique he's outlined though - generally the disks must keep their original names and contents. In the bad old days of multiple floppy installs - you would insert each floppy in succession, a lengthy, error-prone process, or mount all the disk images on your desktop simultaneously via the .img images of the floppies. I believe you'll find the installers expect that the content to be installed is on specific disks. So, if Macmoore's technique fails, try this technique... You need a special piece of software to create the disk images - .img files to be specific - similar to the .dmg files you see in OS X - you can get the software you need here: http://home.earthlink.net/%7Egamba2/bootdisks.html.

Strangely, I can find my Pagemaker version 1.5 disk (yes, singular disk!) and manuals, and everything from 4.0 and up, but I cannot find version 3 anything... however version 4 and 5's manuals, which are both multiple floppy-based, describe the technique I've given here, so I'm assuming (yikes) that version 3, which was multiple floppies as well, used the same technique. Wow, it's been a long time!

Happy PageMaking!
