I use Carbon Copy Cloner
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/13260
to make a bootable backup to an external hard drive.

If you want to backup only certain folders, you could copy the folders to a formated DVD-RW and keep them current using File Synchronization
http://nemesys2.dyndns.org:8080/FileSynchronization_EN.html
$12 US
I use this to keep my User Folder on my backup up-to-date.  It can be set to do this automatically.

Just found this one.

I'd strongly suggest using iBackup for backing up all of your preferences (applications preferences, operating system prefs, bookmarks, etc.) It is freeware. You can even setup a custom schedule...

Good luck!

Hello Geoff,

I found Synk to be a great little utility. (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/7842) It is $20/shareware, but well invested $20 for me. I've used it for years and the last few versions for OS X work like a charm. I set it up to run and shut down my machine when it finish and run it every night before I go home.

Cheers
Lito

What about Apple's own Backup utility for .Mac subscribers after all it is usefull for Images and stuff like that.
Plus it reminds you each week.

It may not be freeware i know i got it for free...
It has an  umbrella icon FYI.

In my opinion, it's really useless if you don't have a .Mac Account with Apple (FYI: a yearly .Mac subscription costs 139$) mainly because you can't take advantage of all the features it has to offer.  Something which I find very limiting, is the limit on the amount of data you can backup. If I remember correctly, you can only backup a maximum of 100 Mb and the huge disadvantage is the inability to backup your data to an external volume (I.e. Zip Drive, Flash drive, Firewire, USB Drives). Not very helpful?  Instead of spending 139$/year - invest that money in something that will be worth it. Go to BestBuy and get an external 120 Gb (or more) hard drive.

One handy feature it has is the QuickPicks packages. Quickpicks are designed to gather all the files related to one application. For example, let's say you would like to backup your Firefox settings, well by clicking on the Firefox QuickPick -- All preferences, settings, bookmarks will be copied.  There is another application out there - freeware - called iBackup which has most of the features that Backup 3 has. Not sure if Disc spanning is supported though? Anyone?

Hope this helps...

I use Carbon Copy CLoner to back up the entire drive to a second drive of the same size.

LaCie has a free backup program that is fairly sophisticated. Check out their web site.

For the ones interested in the free backup application from LaCie. It is called SilverKeeper ; available from VersionTracker.

You should check out this article. It is a fairly descent review of some of the greatest backup utilities available.
