Title: updating Acrobat reader in os9
Post by: AylmerQc on November 28, 2005, 07:55:34 PM
I'm running os9 on my Imac g5 (when I put in an older disc from that period) but I keep getting message that Acrobat reader can't read it because it needs version 6. Turns out I'm running version 4. Not sure why Apple would put such an out of date version of Acrobat on a new computer...Is that as high as OS9 can read?
Anyhow, I'm trying to upgrade to version 7. I've been able to do it in OSX, it was automatic. I was able to download, in os9, version 7 but I can't see where it went to...
If you can help, it's appreciated.
Thanks
JML

Use Spotlight or Sherlock , to find where it went.

Tried Sherlock but, unless i'm using it wrong, it only gives me info from a knowledge base, not what's on my hd...

You have to highlight your hard drive in Sherlock. Then, you do your search. Hope that helps.

OK. I was using OSX Sherlock, which doesn't give the option, as far as i can see, to look in the HD.
Anyhow. I think I've mucked up here. I can't use Adobe in either os9 or OSX 10.38 now. This is a G5 btw.
I get an error message 10660 when I try to open an Adobe file in OSX and in OS 9, it just won't do anything. OS 9 just hangs and I have to force quit it (trying to run an older cooking-recipe program from a CD, nothing fancy) I did download the os X and OS9 upgrade versions of Adobe and they were on my desktop. Not sure what to do next with them. Put the osx version in Applications to see if that's what it needed but that didn't help, might have made it worse. I've been at this for a few days now. I'm also having problems with the Imac acting weird, and need the diagnostic programĀ  TechTool from the AppleCare disc. This is when I get the error 10660, so I can't use it until that's solved. Earlier on when trying to use Acrobat reader I was getting a message about Extensions and plug ins. Can't reproduce that message at the moment though.
My prior experience with Macs was with some oldies that I had lying around and played with and I'm still reading up on OSX.

Are you supposed to download and install programs manually?

Thanks

Some programs you download, you must do a manual install. Other type of updates, do an automatic install. Just open up the folders that you downloaded, to see if there is an installer.
If you still can't find where your downloaded folder is, use Spotlight. ( just type in a few letters ) and
Spotlight should find it. That is what it is for.
I am also quite new to OSX, but have been using 9.2 for about 4 to 5 years. I find having a book for reference purposes to be the easiest, even though, there is a online help section.
