We recently bought an iMac with 512Mb of RAM. When I look at how much memory is taken, it is seperated in three parts: active, inactive and free. Two questions:
1- What is the inactive portion?
2- If the proportions are: active 60%, inactive 39% and free 1%, is it worth upgrading the memory to 1Gb?
The reason for #2 is because we do not see much of a difference between the Mac Mini we just replaced, and the iMac, even if the CPU of the latter is much faster (2GHz compared to 1.25GHz). I would have expected it to be much faster than what we actually see.

OK I added a stick of 512 Mb of RAM (it was the easiest thing to do BTW!!!), and it made all the difference.
It was very cool to see the interior of the machine, you can clearly see where the RAM is seated:
