I upgraded to SS 10.6.8 and I can no longer open any of the files I had created in Appleworks. Is there an application that will do this

Pages & Numbers are the current Apple software which should do it. Purchase necessary.
On my Mac Mini I have an external HD (OS 10.6.8) that I boot to when I want to run Appleworks (6.2.9) software to open related files. It continues to work flawlessly.
Have you checked that Appleworks 6 is in your "Applications Folder".
If it is, are you able to start the Appleworks Application by double-clicking on it's Icon? If that starts up Appleworks, then you are ready for the next step.
In "Finder" locate one of the Appleworks files you couldn't open in the past. While holding down the "Control Key" click in it's Icon. A menu will appear, click on "Get Info", this will open a window where you will see an "Open with:" section, click on the up/down arrows on the right side and scroll to find and select "Appleworks".
Click on the "Change All..." button and your Appleworks files will now open when you double-click on them.
