In the news and new purchases section of the meeting I mentioned my purchase of the Fission audio editor from Rogue Amoeba.
They have a sale on until the end of September to celebrate their 10th anniversary you can get $10 off any of their products.

In the meeting I mentioned a bunch of things about changes at Petro Canada mobility.
http://mobility.petro-canada.ca/default.aspx
Petro Canada mobility is an MVNO (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_virtual_network_operator) that runs on the Rogers network. Their SIM cards will work in any carrier-unlocked phone or any phone locked to Rogers or Fido.

My voicemail pickup stop working recently. I used to be able to dial my own number, or press and hold the "1" key to get into voicemail. That stopped working on my phone. They now use a single Canada-wide number to pick up voicemail: +1 647 669 9989. It is a local call from anywhere in Canada, but if you call on your cellphone, you get charged for local airtime. You can still pick up voicemail from a landline by dialing your own number and pressing "#" to interrupt the outgoing message. That does not consume any airtime.

To get your cellphone to use the new number to pickup voicemail when you press and hold "1" (or hit the little voicemail tape recorder icon) you need to key the following into the phone and press send: *5005*86*+16476699989#

To check the current number assigned for voicemail, key the following into the phone and press send: *#5005*86#

BE VERY CAREFUL when keying these GSM feature codes (http://www.geckobeach.com/cellular/secrets/gsmcodes.php) because some of them can do nasty things.

The Petro Canada service rep who talked to me was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. She told me that calls made to the following area codes are local calls from area code 613: 613, 343, 819, 873. That means, for example, that a call from Kingston to Gatineau is considered local. Do not be concerned if before your call is connected you get a voice telling you that you need to dial "1" to make a long distance call. That message comes from the Rogers infrastructure and is meant for Rogers customers.
