Owning your own domain for email purposes:

3 step process ...

1) Buy your domain

Example domain name registration costs (per year):

Google ($10) -- they use an 3rd party to do this -- use link below to start process
godaddy  (http://www.godaddy.com/)($13)
hover  (http://www.hover.com/)($13.50) -- use discount code DANSENTME to get this price
domainsatcost  (http://www.domainsatcost.ca/)($15)
Many others exist out there. This is just a sample.

2) Setup Google (note-- plenty of alternative email hosts exist but this one is pretty reliable):

Apps for Business
http://www.google.com/enterprise/apps/business/index.html

Users: 10
Email storage per user: 10GB
Custom email adresses: Yes
Cost: $Free

Includes a step-by-step process (universality of terms along with lots of online reference material helped a lot)

Additional Benefits ...
IMAP support,
Import previous email content,
Admin panel
iOS Mail support
Excellent SPAM filtering
Supports "anything"@yourdomain.com delivered to a specific address
Supports aliases

3) Tell everyone!
