The Big the Tall and the small, and i do not know how many of each we have,
I wanted to make you aware that i got myself a new Computer, with the help of one of our members.
And it is a whole new ball game.
Of course you'se are all aware that i use Toast Titanium.
But this computer wanted me to use Toast Titanium 11.
I could not adjust myself to the Software (yet).
So i'm back using Toast Titanium 10.
Problem: Sometimes i get the following message and i quote:
You are about to create a Disc
with mixed Pal and NTSC contents
Are you sure you want to do this.
Disc with mixed content may
not play on all Players.
The confusing part is that the warning does not always show up.
I have gone to my preference file and they give you an option to use one or the other.
And of course i Highlighted the one that says NTSC.
But still i get some files which have no sound.
I use the VIDEO DVD Format.
My question is why does it do that.
Sorry for the mistakes, but after awhile my finger gets tired.

The problem is that your source files are PAL, and your destination is NTSC, so the PAL files need to be re-encoded to play on NTSC sets - as most North American players are. I know older versions of Toast could not do this, but I thought that limitation was removed previous to Toast 10 - I'll look into that and get back to you.

See our other thread just below this one in the support forum - About Formats - where we discussed the difference between formats, and whether Toast could handle it - it can - but it's another conversion step. One option would be to see if an NTSC version of your source file is available and just avoid PAL files altogether - is that a viable option for you?

Good Afternoon
I was trying to burn a Movie but i get the following Response. The movie "Just Go with It (2011) DVDRip XviD-MAXSPEED www.torentz.3xforum.ro.avi" can't be opened.
You may need to install addional software
to open this type of file.
Does anyone know what software i am missing and what is it.

Perian, should be able to handle that, but you may need another Xvid codec to play that movie file. You can get one here:

I downloaded Perian and installed it and restarted the Computer.
I had three Movies that i could not open because they would give me the previous response.
Since i installed Perian, i was able to open one Movie.
So i am still not able to open the other two Movies. As they still give me the previous information.
I thought that the other may of been locked in, but then again why did one open up ?????????????????
Any suggestion as to why the other two will not open

Well, I thought you already had Perian, but the software I linked to is called "DivX", and it's not the same as Perian.
Did you try that as well?
If all else fails, the venerable VLC Player can usually open anything that is a legitimate video file.
If you don't have that on your new Mac, you should get it and try it as well - it's available here:

I was trying to open this Movie File.
But i keep getting the following window
The document "Sucker Punch.2011.ENGL.DivX-PRO.HQ.avi" could not be opened. The movie is not in a format that QuickTime Player understands.
You may need to install additional software to open this type of file
It is a AVI Movie, sorry i'm having a hard time understanding what they meam.

Control-Click on the problem file. From the menu select "Open with" then select "VLC". If the VLC option is not present, you can google VLC to download (for free) and install it. Let us know how that works for you.

So instead of breaking my brains, what little i have left.
I thrashed the file that i had and re-downloaded another file from a different
Website and this one worked.

The last complaint that i wrote was of course the last one.
And i was able to go to a different website to get the file and it worked.
But that was only a temperary solution as i am back with the same problem.
I tried three different web site trying to download the same video and i am back getting the same answer. (And i quote:The movie "Conan the Barbarian 2011 DvDrip Eng aXXo.avi" can't be opened.

Well i do have QuickTime Player, and Perian and also VLC.

First of all, read the comments on the page you linked to from isohunt - the file is apparently infected, and that's why you can't "convert" it - it isn't a real avi file. May I just respectfully remind you - this is how our Windows friends got into so much trouble with malware?
There is no "new" XviD codec - the link to cnet contains no such information and concerns a codec pack for windows. A codec is a codec is a codec and you either have it, or you don't.
Plume, you now have every legitimate transcoder there is - QT, Perian, VLC and DivX. If a movie won't de-code for you - I think you're safe to assume the file is the problem, not your Mac.
Torrent sites are notorious homes for Windows spyware/trojans/etc. I don't think it will be long before Mac users start falling victim to the same tactics used against Windows for all these years. Next, you'll be offered some "free" software that will "clean up" your Mac and defend against all comers - MacDefender for example - only it DOESN'T - it's a wolf in sheep's clothing, a Trojan ready to destroy from within.

I have tried today to download a File called fast five from Demonoid.me and got the same response that i
got from Isohunt.
This is the first time that i have experience such problem.
I am under the impression that you are right.
But i'm baffled as i have tried the said Torrents, but i find that Kickass as given me the same problem.
But i do know now how to tell the difference, as when it is a good download i get a different icon.
But i do not know until i have downloaded the full file.
The good file change from the usual AVI icon to a littlle very dark icon.
Hope you understand what i am trying to explain.

The comments on the isohunt site linked above mention that opening the file in Windows Media Player causes a link to open in the browser - presumably that means it if it is "infected", it is a fairly harmless ruse, depending on what the link actually is... and only affects Windows anyway. Pretty frustrating after an 800 MB download though, eh?
It isn't that uncommon to have fake or infected downloads on torrent sites. Fake downloads are put there by the film industry to frustrate would-be pirates, and to record who is downloading what - your IP is exposed when using bittorrents, and trackers know what your downloading or sharing. Infected downloads are just that - net-baddies know lots of people will download new titles and they target the most popular ones.
There aren't any reliable statistics (is that an oxymoron?) on good-vs-bad files in torrent-land, but I've heard numbers anywhere from 20 percent all the way up to 70 percent. Of course another neat torrent-related trick is to tell the user they need a "special" codec to watch the video, and then offer the link to install it - but it isn't a nice, new codec, oh no - it's a nasty little trojan that can't wait to start becoming the ghost in your machine. It's a jungle out there, be careful.
There are some torrent-scanning services, VERTOR is one I have heard of, that scan and publish a list of verified torrents - I don't know how reliable they are, but I'm sure if you check around, you can find something similar that someone can recommend - online or otherwise.
These practices are common in the Windows user's world, so Windows users have been dealing with these issues much longer than Mac users. It may seem a little unsettling at first, but I see you've already found a way to distinguish a good download from a bad one, that's great! Also, make sure that Safari doesn't automatically process downloads - that's a bad practice but unfortunately is the default setting. No software you download from the internet should be assumed "safe", ever, so whatever software you're using should never do this automatically. You can check your "Preferences..." in Safari - go to the "General" pane and make sure "Open "safe" files after downloading" is not checked.
Of course you probably don't download your torrents using Safari, but it's a good practice anyway.

I downloaded a file last night from Demonoid called Fast Five.
When i open the folder the A.V.I. Icon IMMEDIATELY
changed to a very dark and half the size of the original
A.V.I. Icon.
I then knew that this was a good file.
In order to protect myself as of now if the A.V.I Icon does not change color i just do not click on the file.
I simply thrash it.
It is a son-of-a-gun because i will have download a file for nothing.
And as you mention it takes a long time to download a 800 MB File.
Again thank you to all the people that participate in helping us.

This message is concerning the problem which is defined above about the difficulties that i have been having with the AVI format
I came across a format that i did not have,so i downloaded the format and installed it.
The format is as follows(iFFFmpeg).
I have been able to open all Movie files since i installed it.
I have not had any glishes so far.
So if i should encounter any problems i will definetly let you know.
I am still downloading program of 2009-2010-2011.
I do not know the reason why so far everything is ok.and i do not know
how to explain why.
So maybe someone can pick it up from here and explain why it is working now.

Good ole ffmpeg. I wouldn't recommend the old ffmpeg to anyone unless they were comfortable with using the terminal to run commands, and ffmpeg had some pretty convoluted command options. However, as you have discovered, the libavcodec that is the heart of ffmpeg is the cat's meow when it comes to smoothly handling every video codec known to mac-kind, and libavformat handles the mux-demux from dozens of different file formats. Ffmpeg is actually at the heart of many other video players - VLC, MPlayer, Handbrake, Plex, Perian, heck, even Google's Chrome is built with it.
There was a previous ffmpeg front-end, like iFFmpeg, but it still required quite a bit of knowledge about bit-rates and depths, muxes, and other esoteric properties beyond the ken of most casual users - but a boon to those with a little knowledge. I still have the old version running on a G4 jst for those "impossible" conversions.
Between Perian and VLC Player, most of ffmpeg's powers are already available to you - but iFFmpeg conveniently puts it all under one roof. I am downloading it as I write this, thanks to Plume - thanks for the discovery, and...

Looks like you'se are never going to get rid of me.
I'm back with the same problem, i cannot open 5 AVI Movies and the first message it gives me is as follow.
( the movie Toy Story can't be opned.
You may need to install additional software to open this type of file ).
And there is another comment that tells me ( tell me more ).
By pressing the tell me more comment it bring to the followinf Website and i ( quote

I found the last Format by chance.
But i cannot find the one that applies to the 5 AVI Movies that i cannot open.

If we were trying to get rid of you, we would have suggested you get a PC a long time ago... ;-}
The message you're getting, and the page from Apple's web site, are telling you that Quicktime cannot open the file itself, and there are links to more articles from Apple's Knowledge Base on extending Quicktime with third-party or non-Apple codecs - which you've already done through the discussion we've been having here. I think you have every legitimate decoder there is now, so I don't think that's the problem. You may need to update Perian or Flip4Mac, which you can do from their control panes in System Preferences, or iFFmpeg, which you can check on the web.
If everything's up-to-date, then try opening it from VLC Player. If it doesn't play there, or in Toast, then the files are probably bad, perhaps intentionally - see my post above about corrupt bittorrents.

On my last posting, i never had any problems with the AVI Format.
I'm stunned as to why i cannot open that type of format now.
Since the last reply that i posted i have had to thrash seven files.
6 where AVI FORMATS and one was a mpeg format.
I am flabbergasted, i cannot believe that all of those files where corrupt
I am completly lost.

I'm still having problems with the Format AVI.
I do not have an answer as to why it is doing this.
Of the downloads that i saved in order to keep trying different things
i also downloaded a Movie called ( Second Chorus ) with the AVI, Format.
Just out of curiosity i tried to burn it on Toast Titanium and it work.
I was able to burn the whole copy.
I then tried it on the TV and it worked just fine.
Now, i cannot explain why it did or the only reason would be that it is a Movie of the 1940 era.
I have 5 more copies that i downloaded but would not burn and they are of the AVI format.
I wish i had an answer for you but alas i have not.
I will keep surfing the Internet and maybe i will be lucky.

The Movie that i stated previously i did erase.
I tried something different.
Instead of erasing the picture i did as follows.
I opened Toast Titanium and i chose the DVD format i then drag the movie onto
Toast Titanium and burnt the movie in the DVD format.
I then tried it on the TV and low and behold the picture played beautifully.
So i am now sorry that i erase the others.
Mind new this was the results of one Movie.
I am going to download another Movie and if it should give me the result that i posted previously
i will again try the DVD format and see if it will erase (3avx Trial).

I am responding to my previous comments.
Unfortunetly it did not work.
I am actually baffled, here i am a know nothing where Computers knowledge is concerned.
And i am sure there are people on this board that know so much more than i do.
And i am ready to admit that i really do not know anything concerning Computers.
But i am one of those person that download movies and Burn them, and enjoys doing so.
So where are all those knowledgeable persons that could make me very easily look like a fool.
I have not seen anyone else put an effort in trying to solve this problem.
Or at least we have not heard from anyone else.
It is obvious that by the amount of people reading this post, that i am not the only person who is interested.
Come on guys lets shake one of your legs as the saying goes and help get to the bottom of the problem.

The 3ivx software you are referring to is an ENcoding solution, that is, it is only useful for making video files, not playing them back. After all, you're using Toast to create disks and that takes care of the ENcoding. Your problems seem to be in DEcoding videos, and the solution lies in having the correct DEcoders. Between QuickTime, Perian, iFFmpeg, VLCPlayer and Flip-for-Mac, you should have every known decoder there is. The folks at 3ivx acknowledge somewhere in the thread you linked to that "Perian is all you need" - for DEcoding.
As frustrating and time-consuming as it is, I still think your problem lies at the source. Don't throw money at this problem - you don't need any more software, you need better sources!

I understand what you are saying, but it does not matter which Website i download from ,i only get the same results.
If i am having this problem i can assure you that i am not the only one.
The amount of people that are reading this attachment only proves that i am not the only one with the same problem.
I am trying to burn a movie with Toast 11 and toast does not erase that
darn red comment and i quote ( 31vx Trial ).
I have all of the Decoders that you have mention and it still does the same thing.

I hope this helps, I didn't understand the problem you were having, but I'll presume it's the problem being discussed in the thread you linked.
Basically, find the 3ivx uninstaller, or re-install the software if you can't find it, then run the uninstaller and uninstall the software.
The problem should go away.
If not, follow these directions for removing any files that have the word 3ivx in their name, or have the 3ivx icon, from your /Library/Quicktime folders.
There are three of these folders on your Mac, one in the System folderSystem/Library/Quicktimeone in the Library folderLibrary/Quicktimeand there may be one in your Users folderUsers/~/Library/Quicktime)(where "~" is an alias for the current user's home folder - the actual name is usually your short username, e.g. "sjobs", or "bgates" or "gbush".
The files you need to remove are probably in the second location. Spotlight can't find these files, so you'll have to dig through your hard drive and find them.
There is a Finder shortcut that will help you find these folders. Under the "Go" menu, select "Go to folder..." ( or press shift-command-G), then type in the path you want to see. For example, to go directly to the second location, typeLibrary/Quicktimein the box and click GO. A finder window opens to that folder.
When you find the 3ivx files, throw them in the Trash and restart your Mac. That should stop the watermark from appearing, but it may be embedded in any videos you have already made with the 3ivx ENcoder.
Toast already has all the codecs it needs to burn MP4s, so just let it do the ENcoding - it's automatic when you set Toast to burn DVD-Video anyway - and no watermark!

Good Evening to all
After reading what Dan Miller suggested that we do ?
I went thru all my Hardrive one program at a time, and i found one Program called
( 3ivx ) i opened it to find that there was an uninstaller, so i uninstalled the program
and restarted my Computer.
Before i did this i previously had downloaded two Movies which opened with the 3ivx across the film.
After i restarted my computer i decided to try and open those two movies to see if that 3ivx bar would be there.
Lo and Behold it was not, so i am downloading two Movies now and will find out if that bar shows up.
So i will get back to-morrow with my finding.

Glad that worked for you. Sorry it took so long to figure out what the problem was, but that should take care of it for now. I guess when you install their ENcoder, it also installs some corresponding DEcoders that plant that watermark on whatever they play back - until you buy their product - I think they that's what they call"annoyware"...
Hopefully, your problem is well and truly gone for good, and you may resume your pastime without any further problems!
