Title: External Harddrive (Lacie)
Post by: eugedunn on April 24, 2011, 11:40:52 PM
Good evening
I have a Lacie external Harddrive with a lot of information on it
which i would hate to lose.
It was working fine until i restarted the Computer and it as not worked since,or should i say it will not show up on the Desktop.
All it does is a clicking sound.
I was told that the voltage was not adequate.
So i changed electrical outlet and it did not help..
Is there anyone in ottawa that fixes this external harddrives.
                                                                Thank you for your help

I have a Lacie external Harddrive ... it will not show up on the Desktop.

Does it show up in Disk Utility? This is found in /Applications/Utilities.

Good Morning to you Ben
SORRY, to have taken so long to answer.
But it does not show up in the Disk Utility.
I have a lot of information on the disk which i do wish to lose.
I would be willing to take it somewhere if they could fix it.
Thank you for your interest

Very sorry to hear that the external drive not only does not show up in Finder, but also does not show up in Disk Utility.

Normally to exhaustively confirm that the drive cannot be mounted, I'd recommend trying a different cable, as well as a different computer, but if the drive is making clicking sounds that's likely an indication of a hardware failure and if you are serious about engaging a data recovery service, you want to minimize further operation of the drive.  If you are able to mount the drive, immediately copy the most crucial files to another disk – whenever one is working with a failing drive, never write files back to it as this risks overwriting information you may need to further recover any files from the failing drive.

Unfortunately I don't know of any local data recovery firms. Perhaps someone else does? Data recovery is time-consuming, and hence usually prohibitively expensive for all but business and law enforcement purposes, but I don't know the value of the data to you or your situation, so here are are two US firms that offer advice, as well as over the phone estimates:

PS. This won't help you in this particular case, but for anyone else: if you have data only on a single drive, then you do not have a backup, and what Plume is experiencing could unfortunately happen to you tomorrow. With the proliferation of lower cost, as well as larger and larger drives at Costco, etc, one strategy might be to consider buying them in pairs and ensuring your important files are always stored on at least two drives, so when one fails you will have a backup. As the saying goes: there are two types of people: those who back up regularly and those who will.

Good Morning Ben
I have called one of the places that would fix my Harddrive.
I got a shock and nearly fainted when they told me what it would cost to renew the Drive.
And i Quote (The fellow told me that it could cost between $700.00 and $2050.00. to retract the Information.
I nearly fell off my seat.
There is no way that i can afford to pay such prices.
I will just have to bite the bullet and accept the fact that i have lost my info.
But i will go and buy myself two Harddrives and load equally the information on both of them
I have just learned a valuable lesson, thank you for the Information
I hope a lot of people read this information that you included so this does not happen to them.
Thank you Ben for your time+efforts
You'se have all been so helpful to me
                                                          Have a very good day

Again sorry to hear about your expensive introduction to backups.

Not knowing how many computers you have, the size and number of their internal and external disks, and the type and kind (e.g. Photos, music, video, documents...) of files you wish to safeguard, makes it impossible for me to advise you on the best backup strategy for you.

You may consider just booking an appointment at the Apple Rideau Centre Genius Bar to discuss the options.

A backup strategy that you don't have to think about is best for many people. For example:
- Every Mac comes with a backup program called Time Machine, which the Genius Bar could walk you through.
- Another approach, especially for laptop users is the Apple Time Capsule, a combination wireless access point and hard drive that can work with Time Machine. Again the Genius Bar could walk you through this option.
- Some folks prefer off-site backup to guard against fire-damage or theft of their backup drive. Services like backblaze.com or Mozy.com let you back up to the Internet.
- Other folks don't have a lot to back up and can manage backing up their files to USB sticks which are readily available in sizes up to 16GB and more.

So don't hesitate to leverage the Genius Bar to find a backup strategy that's right for you.

Just my 2 cents:
I would hold on to that hard drive. Maybe in the future you'll find someone who can do it for you for a lot less $$. There has to be services in India, for example, that can do this, like they do archiving of photos, for a fraction of what it costs us in North America. Do some Googling. Maybe even on Youtube someone might have a DIY process..

Good luck

Just thinking: You don't happen to have some kind of insurance policy that might over this? Maybe the Credit card you used, or debit card, or the Lacie warranty itself..?
