Title: Problem downloading PDFs?
Post by: Pedalnut on April 24, 2011, 06:31:24 PM
Hello All!

Whenever I try to download a .PDF file from a web site, from within a browser, my browser opens a new tab, and presents me with a dialogue box.

It seems to me, that it's asking me to select an application to open the .PDF that I'm trying to download?

But, some if not most of the applications within my Application folder are grayed out, thereby not allowing me to select anything?

I'm on OS 10.5.8, and even in other browsers, such as Safari, I'm confronted with the same 'deadend' situation.

Anyone know how to correct this, presumable by resetting some sort of system wide setting?

... feeling a little bewildered?

Bill

p.s. Seems to me, this has something to do with file mapping?  If so, how do I make this correction, from within OS 10.5.8?

The default behaviour of Safari in Leopard (OS X 10.5), like that in Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6), should be to display a PDF file automatically within the browser. If this is not occurring, the first thing I would do would be to check for the presence of any 3rd-party browser PDF plug-in that might interfering with the default behaviour of OS X. Check these two folders (Finder -> Go -> Go to Folder...) for any plug-in for PDF files:

/Library/Internet Plug-Ins
~Library/Internet Plug-Ins

...such as AdobePDFViewer.plugin, etc.  If you find one, remove it, restart Safari, and see if that returns default browser behaviour of displaying PDF files.

PS. For any PDF files already on your hard drive, double-clicking should open Preview.app. If that is not occuring, highlight a PDF file, press Command-I, select Preview.app from within the pop-up below Open with..., and then press Change All...
