Title: New iMac with Trackpad
Post by: pbridges on August 05, 2010, 06:39:40 PM
I bought the new 21.5 in iMac on Tuesday to replace an eMac running OS 10.3.9.
What a marvelous computer with a screen size twice my old one, and the wireless mouse
has all these wonderful scrolling features.  Very fast and quiet computer.
I decided to try a fresh start and not copy all the accumulated garbage on my  old one,
some of the files are over 15 years old.
So I am using Mail and Safari instead of Eudora and Firefox.
Photoshop 3 installed but would not run, so I have installed Photoshop 8.
I bought Iwork and installed it to replace Appleworks.

I have not paid much attention to the Trackpad yet, it looks like an extension to the keyboard.
I had to return to the store to buy a Firewire 800/400 9-pin to 6-pin cable so as to use my
Firewire hard drive, and to cross connect the two computers if I want to.

So now my questions:
I would like to transfer most of my e-mail addresses, but I am not sure how to.
One idea is to use Mail on the old eMac and import the Eudora addresses to the Address book.
Then transfer this file to the iMac and load it into the Address book. Is this feasible ?

My names & addresses are in an Appleworks database, so that I can print address labels.
Can I use the Address book on the new iMac to print Address labels ? and any suggestions
on the easiest way to copy them ?

My Appleworks Word Processing and Spreadsheet files seem to be OK in Iwork, but there
are functions not working, and some formatting problems, I assume I can fix these.
But I do not know any replacement for my Drawing files. Its a minor problem but it would be
nice to have a solution, any suggestions ?

I had a minor problem with some Iphoto libraries, they would not copy (drag & drop) to memory sticks
with the message "one or more items can't be copied etc.", but they do copy to my Firewire
drive.  Why is this ?

Regarding Appleworks and iWorks, I've found that I prefer Appleworks for some things.  So I have both on the computer and use Appleworks quite often.  If your copy of Appleworks does the job, I'd keep it.  The thing is that Numbers seems to require more tweaking if you're doing something a little bit different, and I often use spreadsheets for lists and so forth.  Trying to do without Appleworks on another computer has made me see that I want to add it where I don't have it already.

Appleworks does what it does quite well. This is funny:

There is a "known issue" with AppleWorks 6 when typing long documents. When typing somewhere into page 42, all the text disappears. This may be an easter egg which makes reference to the answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything in Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series, which is also "42". There is a remedy to this.

"Do not panic. The text has only changed to the color white. Simply 'Select All' (Command-A) then change the text color to black. Save immediately, then immediately [paste] in enough text to get beyond page 42. Save again."

Hey, congrats on your iMac, it's a pretty sweet machine.

Good old AppleWorks - I still have an older G4 with it running, and I seriously don't know what I'll do when it dies. I rely on it for translating old file formats like WordPerfect 5 and of course Claris/AppleWorks docs, I guess MacLink will have to come to the rescue. Have you looked at Open Office or Neo Office or Lotus Symphony? - all variants of the original Open Office which spun off from Sun's StarOffice product, and they're all free! It's still not a good drawing environment however, but I might suggest OmniGraffle or EazyDraw or Intaglio if you don't mind shelling out $60-120 for a good replacement. Intaglio even imports MacDraw II and ClarisDraw documents, and looks very MacDraw-like. Another, cheaper alternative is iDraw.

Eudora, believe it or not, is undergoing a renaissance, and is still available for Mac OS X - see www.eudora.com for more info on their current version - 6.2.4, and their upcoming version 8 - based in the Mozilla ThunderBird client if I remember correctly. However, Apple Mail in Snow Leopard still has import capabilities for Eudora - select "Import Mailboxes..." from the File menu and choose the Eudora option. Your Eudora Mail is in a folder called "Eudora Folder" in your Home/Documents folder. If you just want addresses from Eudora, here's a quote from the Address Book help file:

QuoteAddress Book can import contact information that you have saved or exported from other applications in vCard, LDAP Interchange Format (LDIF), tab-delimited, and comma-separated value (CSV) formats.

You can export addresses in LDIF format from Netscape, and vCards from Entourage, Outlook, and others. You can export text files in tab-delimited or CSV format from Numbers or most databases.

If that helps... it also indicates you could export from your AppleWorks database in tab-delimited or CSV, and then import them into Address Book, making them available to Mail. Address Book has label-printing functionality as well, just check the "Print" window out - support for Avery labels, etc. is built-in.

As to the memory stick/firewire drive conundrum, the only thing I can think of is that the mem sticks are usually formatted FAT-for-DOS, and you can't use any of the following characters in a filename for that media:

Quote" / \ * ? < > | :

You can't use / or : in a Mac filename either, so it may be one of the other Mac-permissible, FAT-excluded characters? But, as they say at Apple, that's just a WAG - Wild-Ass-Guess.

Happy Mac'ing!

The Mail application on the old eMac had an "Import Addresses" (with a Eudora option) command in its Script menu.
This transferred all my e-mail addresses to the Address Book.
The Address application then has a "Backup Database" command in its File menu.
I transferred the resulting file to the new iMac and used the "Import" command in the Address Book File menu to load
all my e-mail addresses.

That was the easy part.
To bring over my Appleworks address database I made a PDF file on the old Mac, brought this
file over to the new Mac and opened it. Then drag over each part of the name and address fields to
the entry in the Address Book. About 8 - 10 times for each Card, about 80 cards.
