Title: Canon A1100 IS User Guide: Preview.app shows "COPY" watermark, but not Acrobat?
Post by: ben schmidt on February 19, 2010, 07:21:19 PM
Canon's saving money by no longer including the User Guide with some of their camera's such as the Canon A1100 IS. If I go to the canon site:

http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=183&modelid=18138#DownloadDetailAct

... I can download the User Guide as a PDF from here:

http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/6/0300001856/01/PSA1100IS_CUG_EN.pdf

In Preview v5.0.1 (503), every page of the manual has the word "COPY" written across every page, which interferes with legibility.

If I open the same PSA1100IS_CUG_EN.pdf file in Acrobat Pro 9, then the word "COPY" is no longer displayed.

Any ideas? I think someone at Canon may have scr*wed up when they created the PDF file? BTW, Preview.app's Tools > Show Inspector > Encryption lists the file as "You may print this PDF". Preview.app's Tools also identifies the PDF file as created with Acrobat Distiller 7.0 (Windows) from Framemaker 7.2.

Hi Ben,

The copy is a watermark that is actually in the PDF, but because of the way it is formed, it is masked out by Acrobat Pro. If you run the preflight in Acrobat Pro, depending on the preflight profile, you'll see the watermark listed as either a transparency or not set to print error, and if you enable the "snap" viewer you can see the missing element. Preview's PDF engine simply ignores the error and displays the word anyway. It's more likely the designer and not FrameMaker producing the badly formed PDF, after all the document uses three different colorspaces and is not PDF-X-compliant. I've had similar problems with "hidden" elements in an Illustrator file appearing in the PDF. Luckily, you don't want the watermark to appear anyway - right?

Happy Mac'ing!

Dan

Hey Dan, thanks as always for your insights! ...ben

BTW, even though Acrobat Pro 9 inhibits the display of the watermark, when I go to print, the watermark then shows up again in the Standard Print Dialog. It seems that even though Acrobat Pro 9 may have its own PDF engine which correctly handles (i.e. inhibits) the watermark, Acrobat Pro 9 still relies on OS X for the actual printing, and OS X insists on printing the watermark.

The one way around printing the watermark that I've discovered, but which I haven't yet followed through on, is to open the PDF in Acrobat Pro 9 in order to inhibit the display of the watermark, take a PDF snapshot of each individual page, and then print those and then the watermark does not appear. Unfortunately the Canon A1100 IS User Guide is 132 pages. That's a lot of Shift-Command-4 presses! <grin>

It definitely looks like Canon scr*wed up in creating their User Guide. Maybe the watermark is less noticeable when printed on a laser printer, but when printed on my Canon IP5000 inkjet, the big "COPY" printed across each page interferes with legibility.

FYI,

I ended up printing the Canon A1100 PDF manual from a PC (XP SP3) running Acrobat Pro 8 -- the 'Do not copy' watermark did not show up on the printed pages.

I could find no way to print the Canon A1100 PDF manual from OS X  whether from Preview or Acrobat Pro 8 without the 'Do not copy' watermark printing on every page.
