I have an eMac, G4, 700 mHz. I'm still running OSX 10.2.8 and would like to (finally) upgrade the OS to extend the operating life a little. I can't find any indication on Apple's site that they still have OSX 10.3 avaialable for older systems. (They seem to have borrowed a page from Bill Gate's philosophy about non-support for older systems.)
1. Does anyone know where I can get my hands on a copy of OSX 10.3 (I believe 10.3.7 or 10.3.8?).
2. I read on EveryMac.com that the highest version the eMac G4/700 wlil run is 10.4.11. Does anyone know if it advisable to push the envelope that far with this processor?
3. On another thread I read with dismay about the problems of running OS 9 under OSX 10.5. Apparently it has to be on a separate partition or separate drive, and booted separately. Does OSX 10.3 have the same problem?
hey,
10.3 is availible on ebay at quite a cheap price. now, i also have in my colleciton of macs a 700/g4 emac. i use it on my synthesizer rig (yes its huge and heavy) and i installed 10.4.11 on it. now, on my emac, i put a DVD-ROM in it, from the factory it only had a CD-RW. so you'd have to check the specs of the machine to see what the optical drive is.
i recently bought from apple (on the phone 1-800-MYAPPLE) Tiger for 140$. expensive, but well worth it. they still sell it, tho the documentation and box is in french, but the DVD is mulitlanguage. no big deal for me, which is why i purchased it. if 140$ isnt in your price range, check ebay. but i personally prefered having a nice complete brand new package of Tiger.
hope that helps & lemme know how that works out!
mike
Thanks to those of you who have replied. I have obtained a copy of OSX 10.3 and installed it. I can't figure out how to delete this post (Can't find the Modify and Delete butons described under Help)
Just to clarify a few points (many of them covered here: http://www.mugoo.com/smf/index.php?board=7.0 ) ...
Posts are never removed from this message board, they just get older and "move down".
Posts in the Buy/Sell/Want forum get moved to an archive soon after an item is bought, sold, or found.
The post you made here combines a support question with elements of a looking for request, but you posted it in support (which was the right place). Note that the technical questions you asked have not been answered.
Clear as mud? ;-)
To administrator: thank you for the direction. To go back to my original questions:
1. I have obtained a copy of OSX10.3 through another member of Mugoo.
2. I am advised by at least one other member that OSX 10.4.11 will run on the eMac G4/700 will run is 10.4.11, but 1GB RAM is recommended. I have an offer to install it as well that I am considering, but I am looking at whether I would be better to make the leap to a new computer.
3. OSX 10.3 does not have the same problem with OS 9.
My questions have been answered for now.
