I have an emac G4/700mHz that is still running on OSX 10.2.8. I'm looking for an external hard drive, 250-500GB, that runs on Firewire. The logical choice should be LaCie, but all the models currently sold seem to specify OSX 10.3 as the minimum system requirement. (I know, I need to upgrade the OS, but that 's another issue, and I want to back up my hard drive first if I can.) Anyone know of another make of hard drive I can get that still runs on 10.2.8? Or have one to sell?
Hi JW,
I must be missing something. I'm not sure what would make a firewire drive that's compatible with say OS X 10.3 and later incompatible with OS X 10.2. I'm thinking maybe the default formatting that the drive arrives with. But that could be changed just by re-formatting the drive using Disk Utility in OS X 10.2 before use. If you picked up a firewire drive from a shop with a return policy, you could verify that it works, after re-formatting if necessary, and have the option to return it otherwise. I recall in the early days there used to be manufacturer firmware updates required for various firewire drives from time to time, but in later years I no longer recall ever reading about the need to do this-- presumably the various firewire spec and driver issues have all since been ironed out by now.

Thanks for the reply. I have managed to upgrade to OSX 10.3, which solves my problem for now. I can't figure out how to delete my post. The Modify & Deelte buttons referred to in Help don't appear on my screen.
I don't think we are supposed to be able delete posts on this board: the idea being folks can search the support posts and benefit from past threads. So just update the thread with a post as you did, and all is good.

In other forums which do not allow deletions of one's own posts, some use the technique of editing, erasing content, and entering something like "Edited to delete." to rthen repost.

In fact, why not read all of the posts here: http://www.mugoo.com/smf/index.php?board=7.0 ????
