Title: Using Applejack
Post by: airforce on July 11, 2009, 02:13:10 PM
hiya - As suggested in the latest MACWORLD mag. I downloaded AppleJack to my HD.

When I try to use it by clicking on the icon in my HD, all that happens is that I get taken back to the Installation page which I have already done a couple of times.

How do I activate this AppleJack troubleshooting item ?

Thanks

Hi,

AppleJack is a Command line program.
If you have successfully run the AppleJack installer, then you can run /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app
Type in the terminal display: man applejack
This will display the Unix MANual page for the applejack command-line program. I copied the instructions to run AppleJack from this man page, viz:

Only run AppleJack after you boot your Mac into Single User mode. This is done as follows:
1) Restart your computer.
2) After you hear the startup chime, press and hold down the Cmd and s keys together (this will put you in single user mode).
3) You should soon get a Terminal-type screen with a dramatic garble of indecipherable messages and a shell prompt that looks something like [root#]
4) Now, type applejack at the prompt.
5) Follow the instructions that then appear.

To do a thorough clean up, at the prompt mentioned in number 4) above, type (case sensitive)

applejack AUTO restart

then press Enter

This works automatically and when Applejack is finished it will restart your computer.

Airforce,
Are u experiencing a particular problem that you wish AppleJack to address?

MacMoore,
re: the use of the AUTO argument when invoking AppleJack, the AppleJack man page advises caution:
"Use this option only if you are still having trouble booting up after a previous use of AppleJack."

thank you for the answers.  In answer to "....b", I don't have a specific problem - just thought that Applejack was a program which would "clean up" anything which might be wrong with my Mac......something which I perhaps am not aware of.

I gather from the answers that if I have to run it in Single User mode, I'd better stay away from it unless I can identify a "real" problem.

thanks.
