Well, it looks like one of my HDs might be toast. And not everything on it was backed up properly.

Has anyone had experience with local data recovery companies, and could you recommend someone?

Obviously someone who knows Macs.

Try Data Rescue from ProSoft Engineering (www.prosofteng.com). It saved my sorry ass recently. Managed to retrieve all my files from a hosed 120 GB HD. Takes a while to do it though.
