Mac security.

Lots of advice concerning "turning on" OSX firewall; but what does this actually mean for the unsophisticated new Mac user?

There are three choices which seem to be ---allow everthing to pass in, allow very little, which could compromise function or the third and last choice which is to identify and allow only specific named programs.

I was advised by tech that first choice was the correct one as Macs not vunerable; this seems to be wrong with new information.

How do I "TURN ON" the firewall in Mac OSX' in simple English please.
