Title: Address Book Backward Compatibility
Post by: jfwilson on February 05, 2009, 03:27:24 PM
Just bought a new iMac -- a 24" 3.06 core duo.

I migrated the Address Book from my G4, then updated it with new or changed V-cards Exported from my iBook.  So my iMac is now up-to-date ... after a couple of hours of plowing through the differences (seems to be no way to "detect" the differences and simply perform updates ... unfortunately ...)

But my question/problem, is about distributing this up-to-dated Address Book back to my G4 and iBook.  I thought it would be a simple matter to use the "Revert to Address Book backup" feature, using the iMac's exported Address Book as that "backup".  It did bring in all the Groups that had been migrated from the G4 to the iMac, but missed many of the iMac Address Book entries (Names) created via V card imports.

So I tried another technique: took the AddressBook directly from the iMac (Library -> Application Support -> AddressBook) and dropped it over the equivalent on the iBook.  It made no difference from the revert to backup step I'd tried.  This seems to be telling me that there are version incompatibilities between the AddressBook entries in Address Book v4.1.1 (on the iMac, running the latest OS X 10.5.6) and v4.0.6 (on the iBook, running under OS X 10.4.11).

Any thoughts about this?  Is there a way to "downgrade" the Address Book v4.1.1 to v4.0.6?  Or can individual V cards be downgraded to work? (although that is still a daunting task that I've already just been through ...)

I was also considering using Mobile Me to maintain the Address Books on the 3 Macs in sync.  But if the versions of Address Book don't support this ... unless, of course Mobile Me will handle the version buffering ... ?

Thanks guys.
