Title: back-up Time capsule
Post by: m3m on January 08, 2009, 12:07:12 AM
I have had Time Machine backing up onto my Time Capsule. I want to back up the stuff that is on another iMac which also has Leopard but is dying.  I want to be able to transfer only the stuff from the dying machine from the Time Machine to a new machine at a  later date. The firewire port does not seem to work on the old iMac so that's the reason I want to do it wirelessly.

My problem - how do I do this without messing up my stuff which has been backed up? How do I keep it separate?

Thanks

Hi,

I have two Macs, a Mini and a MacbookPro, both being backed up (wirelessly) to a Time Capsule. I didn't do anything special to have multiple computers share my single Time Capsule. If I mount the Time Capsule directly, I can see that there are just two files on the Time Capsule: a .sparseimage file for each Mac being backed up. So you should have no problem keeping the backup files for each Mac 'separate'.

By "stuff" do you mean data files or programs?  If programs are self-contained, there is little difference in any event.  So what is wrong with simply selecting and copying files to and from an external hard drive [or whatever is suitable capacity]?  That can be done almost as readily with Finder.  I did come across a free 2-panel file manager, but it is a simple almost to use 2 instances of Finder to drag and drop.  If the file manager had several more useful features, as some [Windows versions] do, I'd use that exclusively.
