Hi,
Apple released firmware 2.2 for the iPhone yesterday. I have a new iPhone 3G that came with firmware 2.1. When I connect it to iTunes 8 and click on "Check for Update", iTunes puts up a dialog box that reads: "This version of the iPhone software (2.1) is the current version."
Anyone else try to update to firmware 2.2?

Hi Ben,
Seems to be working for most users - did you allow the iTunes 8.0.2 update to go first? I doubt that's the problem, but everyone I spoke to said they had done the update first, and there are sporadic reports like yours - they click update and... nothing happens for a loooong time. Keep trying!
Dan
It may just be the normal Apple delay in propagating new software to different regions. I am downloading the firmware today which the latest version of iTunes immediately notified of the iPhone firmware update when I connected my iPhone. Some bugs already have been reported in the new v2.2 firmware. For example photos sent to the iPhone via email scale up the thumbnail instead of scaling down the high quality image when saved on the iPhone. Some software also needs to be updated to work with the new firmware (e.g. Phoneview updated to v2.1).
My firmware download was uneventful except that for some reason my iPhone battery indication went from fully charged to low while it was plugged in. I also got prompted for new Canadian App store terms and conditions for the first new app after installing the new firmware. Everything seems to be working fine although I haven't done extensive testing yet.
Thanks Dan and Glenn. As Glenn suggested, I may have been too quick off the mark and not waited long enough for the update to be available to iTunes Canada. I ended up MacGyvering it: downloaded the firmware update directly from Apple's backend servers (http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=750) and then held down 'Option' when clicking on iPhone restore in iTunes to select the firmware update.
