I have had an iTunes account for a few years, but recently set up a @me.com account. is it possible to have my purchases playable from old account play under new account or does that mean repurchasing all my songs and movies again.

Songs in iTunes aren't hooked to an iTunes account, they're hooked to a computer (if they have DMR) and a computer account. The iTunes account is only used to login to iTunes, buy and download songs. Once it's downloaded to your computer it's yours within the restrictions of the DMR if there is DMR on the song.
For example if your on your Macbook Pro as user Sean, and you use your iTunes account to download a song to your iTunes on the Macbook Pro, the song is authorized to be played on that computer, and will show up in your iTunes when your logged onto that Macbook Pro as user Sean.
