hello life savers,
I switched from bell's Sympatico to Rogers yesterday and in setting up my e-mail I ended up with one of those rogers.yahoo.com e-mail service which is nowhere as neat as simply clicking on our "stamp" in our widget space.
I am told by someone who has a PC that I will have to find something called Settings and there enter Broadband.Rogers.com in both the POP3 and the SMTP areas (?) to be able to get my mail whenever I click on my "stamp"......problems are:
is this true ? and where do I find these "settings"......and most important, will that solve my problem.
I did get a coupe of messages in the Rogers.Yahoo mail system but to get to it, you have to click on 3 or 4 items in order to get to mail - - much too cumbersome.
Your life-saving advice is once again sought.....
Cheers

The easiest way to set up a new account in Apple's Mail program is to use the "Add Account" item in Mail's "File" menu. Mail will walk you through gathering the information it needs to set up your Mail account. You do need to know a few things before you begin the procedure.
1) whether you want a POP (mail files live on your computer) or IMAP (mail files live somewhere else) account. Usually, you should choose POP for your ISPs mail service.
2) your email account user name - the part before the @ symbol,
3) your new email address
4) your email account password.
5) the incoming mail (POP) server's name.
6) the outbound mail server's name.
7) whether authentication is used and how.
Mail will check the info as you enter it, and it should be successful in most cases. If you have problems, simply cancel the process. Check all your information, make sure you main internet connection is working, and try again. If you still cannot set up an account, call Rogers (or whoever your ISP is) and verify the info you have is correct. Or, go through the Add Account routine while you're talking to them. Whatever happens, make sure you write down all this vital info somewhere in case you ever have to recreate your account.
To add more accounts from the same mail server, simply repeat the process with the new user name. Different mail services, like Gmail and Hotmail require different setups, and using mail on a mobile computer requires some special tricks, but this is your basic home email setup.
To access the Settings for your Mail account after you have created it:
1) open the Mail program (the "stamp" icon),
2) click the Mail menu and choose Preferences, or press command-comma,
3) select Accounts from the icons at the top of the Preference window,
4) select the Account you wish to change from the list that appears on the left, or,
5) click the plus/minus buttons below the list of accounts to add/delete an account.
Selecting an account from the list causes its settings to appear. Each account has three "panes", Account Information, Mailbox Behaviors, and Advanced.
Account Information is where most of the settings you entered above can be seen and changed. Let's go through each entry field here.
Description: a descriptive name for the account (how the account is named in your Mail list) - can be anything.
Email address: the actual email address assigned to you, i.e macuser@rogers.com - must be exactly as given.
Full Name: the name that appears after "From" - can be anything.
Incoming Mail Server: the POP server's name, i.e. "pop3.rogershs.ca", your ISP should supply this info, or you can look it up on their fine help website.
User Name: should be the same as your email address above, but sometimes just the name portion is needed. For example, it would be either just macuser or macuser@rogers.com - if just the name doesn't work, then try the full email address.
Password: enter the password your ISP supplied you with (right?- remember to change it!) exactly, upper/lower case IS important.
Outgoing Mail Server: the SMTP server's name, as with the Incoming server, you must enter the name your ISP has supplied you with. Sometimes this is the same name for both in- and out-going servers, and sometimes they are different. Check with your ISP.
Server Settings: these are for the Incoming mail server, and generally have to do with security. Again, refer to your ISP's info for these settings. You may have to change the port number(enter the port number if given, otherwise leave at default), enable SSL (secure sockets layer-check on/off)), or set an authentication method (usually just the "password" method)
That's it for the basic settings. The Mailbox behaviours pane contains some important settings as well. You can tell Mail how to handle your Sent, Junk, and Trash files. That is, whether to keep them or automatically throw them out after a specified amount of time. You probably want to keep your Sent files, but automatically delete your Junk or Trash files after a certain amount of time.
The Advanced pane is not as scary as it sounds. You can tell Mail whether this account should be active and if the mail should be checked at the same time as all other accounts. You can also tell the POP server how long to keep mail on the server after you have downloaded it - usually this is set to immediate. Normally, your Mail files all live in your Home/Library/Mail folder, but you can change the location in the advanced pane. The last item in the advanced pane is the Security settings for the Outgoing mail server (the Incoming mail servers security settings are accessed in the Account Information pane by clicking the "Server Settings" button). This includes the Port number, the SSL option, and the Authentication method just as for the Incoming mail server.
Hope this helps anyone who needs it...
Happy Mac'ing!
