Title: Final Decison -- Switching to Mac...but........
Post by: Phoenix on May 06, 2005, 06:33:18 PM
Hello MUG,

I've decided finally to switch from Windows PC to Apple and as my first step buy a Mac mini.......

1. But any idea on when it'll be shipped with the new Tiger OS?

2. Where is the best place that sells and services Macs in Ottawa/Kanata?

3. Any honest place (The Mac Group / Online store / Compusmart)?

4. Any promos/deals on buying Macs for gov.  employees?

5. Any ideas on what I could do with my fully loaded DELL Dimension XPS 4100 P III 800 MHZ system?

6. Should I keep it and turn in into something.....Server........networked PC.....Backup .........or if it's too much of a hassle to keep how much can I sell it for?

Ciao.....

Hi,

Here are a few suggetsions to your questions.

1. But any idea on when it'll be shipped with the new Tiger OS?
I would personaly install Panther 10.3.9, it's a stable platform, it has proven itself, and Tiger at this point is only on it's first generation, you should wait until it has been revised a few times before installing it.

2. Where is the best place that sells and services Macs in Ottawa/Kanata?
There are several places to chose from, you can refer to the older threads, to find a location that will suite you best.

3. Any honest place (The Mac Group / Online store / Compusmart)?
Myself and several friends have had terrible experience with the Mac Group, I would recommend Compusmart.

4. Any promos/deals on buying Macs for gov.  employees?
Why should there be ???

5. Any ideas on what I could do with my fully loaded DELL Dimension XPS 4100 P III 800 MHZ system?
Use it as a paper weight, unless it falls to the floor, you will be assured that it will not crash.

6. Should I keep it and turn in into something.....Server........networked PC.....Backup .........or if it's too much of a hassle to keep how much can I sell it for?
See answer provided to your question " 5 ".

All jokes set aside, Windows base computers are not a stable environment, that being said, you can either keep it because the resale value is not good  on Windows base computers, or sell it on the Ottawa computer news group.

Regards,
Denis

PS : I mostly work on my Mac's, but at odd times, I will key stoke a PC, I hate it, but I do it anyway.

To these two questions:

5. Any ideas on what I could do with my fully loaded DELL Dimension XPS 4100 P III 800 MHZ system?

6. Should I keep it and turn in into something.....Server........networked PC.....Backup .........or if it's too much of a hassle to keep how much can I sell it for?

Keep your PC and buy a  "2-port usb kvm switch"  which will allow you to use both at the same time.  Some switches will allow the sharing of other usb devices such as printers, cameras & scanners.  You can also network your PC and Mini together.

Hey Phoenix,

Most of your questions have been answered by other Mugoo'ers, but I would just like to add my two cents on some of your questions:

1. But any idea on when it'll be shipped with the new Tiger OS?

If you can't wait until it ships with Tiger, Apple offers a "Mac Up-To-Date" program, which enables people to get Tiger for free if you bought your computer within a certain time frame.  Check Apple Canada's website for further details.

2. Where is the best place that sells and services Macs in Ottawa/Kanata?

I've had an excellent buying experience with the Best Buy store in the East end, and would recommend it to anyone.

5. Any ideas on what I could do with my fully loaded DELL Dimension XPS 4100 P III 800 MHZ system?

It's true--Windows PCs don't have a horrible resale value.  If you can't sell it through the newsgroup, I would consider donating it to a charity of your choice.  They could issue a tax receipt for the value of the computer, and you can put that on your income tax report.

Glad to see you're going to get a Mini.  I don't think you'll regret it... few do.

here's my 2 cents

1. But any idea on when it'll be shipped with the new Tiger OS?
as a mac reseller myself i have already started to get some units in with tiger, so not long at all, yes tiger does have an up to date program ( www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate ) however its not free, its 12.50 canadian ( however compusmart will give you a 20$ mail in rebate to cover the cost of tiger and more). tiger is a good choice to go for...i've been running it since before the release and have had no issues with it what so ever...there isnt really a whole thats different from 10.3.9. so its not like the re-built the os from scratch just did adding.

2. Where is the best place that sells and services Macs in Ottawa/Kanata?
same here...bad news i have heard from the mac group and bestbuy is meh.. its half okay they dont have alot of product in stock that isnt an open boxed, and as far as imacs they get 9 for all of eastern ontario..so you might be waiting a while. i work at compusmart i have every model of mac except emac in stock, and if i dont i can get them within a couple days.

3. Any honest place (The Mac Group / Online store / Compusmart)?
your call...visit...talk to the mac person in their department and then make your decision from your conversation...good info and nice ppl....good place

4. Any promos/deals on buying Macs for gov.  employees?
there is no discount for gov. the only discount is for students and teachers, and then certain business that apple has setup with ( ie telus)

5. Any ideas on what I could do with my fully loaded DELL Dimension XPS 4100 P III 800 MHZ system?
paper weight does sound good to me !!
