Title: iPhone sending off an RF signal to desktop speakers?
Post by: MacUser4Life on July 29, 2008, 08:54:44 AM

So I am on day 3 of using my iPhone, and I do really enjoy it. But when I have it sitting on my desk at work and a text message comes in, I can hear it coming in through my computer desktop (PC) speakers. It's the funniest thing, it sounds like the "digital gallop" of a horse (circa 1990s gameboy games) and then I hear the tri-tone "trill" of the message having arrived.

Of course this lessens as I take the phone farther away from the speakers.

Any other iPhone users experiencing this little quirk?

From my experience, all GSM phones do this. On my non-iPhone, the "gallop" starts before the phone rings.

For the acroynm-challanged, GSM would be any cell phone on Rogers or Fido, which includes of course the iPhone. Bell and Telus cell phones use a different system, and so as the Soup Nazi of Jerry Seinfeld (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFIVNwiq8ls) fame might say: "No iPhone for you!"

OK, so now that you know what causes this, you might be able to get some relief by replacing the speakers or improvising a shield. Just google "iphone shielded speakers'. Here are a few hits I got:

Let us know if you find something that works (or doesn't work) for you.
best of luck,
