Title: LF: OS 10.4 for G5 upgrade
Post by: evg on June 17, 2008, 10:26:29 PM
Hello,

alas Firefox 3 requires 10.4 so I cannot delay upgrading any longer. Anyone have an old copy of 10.4 around?

I hear 10.5 is too slow on a G5 iMacs plus a 10.3 to 10.4 upgrade is safer.

Thank you.

I recently installed Leopard on my father in law's G5 Imac, i think he has a 1.9, and its not too bad at all. We also maxxed out the RAM trough trans intl and its been great! If he had been having problems with it, we would have heard by now ;)

I am also interested in OS 10.4 for a G5 PC. Anybody willing to sell it? Mark

Go ahead and get Leopard, it's your "last kick at the cat" anyway, Snow Leopard will reportedly "freeze out" PPC-based Macs! And, in accord with Messr. Wallace, I seriously doubt you'll find Leopard runs slower. I've heard this old saw about every single OS X upgrade and in every case, it's just computer curmudgeons making unfounded statements. Geekbench and other benchmarks show this, clearly, not to be the case. So go ahead and make the leap, you'll never look back, unless you're using QuickLook in your Time Machine!

Bump the RAM to at least 2GB (I suggest a name brand like Shika, but Kingston and Crucial are just as good, though a bit more expensive). Then, to be sure there are no slow-downs, upgrade all your apps - this is what causes most curmudgeon's computers to "slow down". They upgrade the OS, and leave Office 1989 running. It's slow all right, and it's no wonder!

Happy Mac'ing,

Dan

Thanks to all for the comments.

Has anyone upgraded from 10.3 to 10.5? I am eager to have Time Machine but don't want any upgrade problems with email, iPhoto, Photoshop, and a couple of other apps. I did max out the RAM (paired Crucial) but my hard drive is always full and slooooow. That could be upgraded too or just get a newer iMac.

By the way I'm willing to buy the upgrade or full version, I was just hoping to save on it.

Maybe I should skip 10.4 and go directly to 10.5?

Anybody have thoughts on this? Maybe I'll post to a separate topic.

Yes - go right to Leopard. Get a bigger hard drive. Do a clean install on the new drive, then use Migration assistant to bring over all your old stuff. You don't have to use Time machine - but if you want to - you'll need another drive as big or bigger than the drive it backs up. iPhoto will need am upgrade - which Software Update will do for you. PhotoShop CS or better is fine.

Good Luck!
