I'd like to install OSX on my clamshell (for the purposes of getting a more recent browser on it). I know this is possible, but I don't have the knowhow or the tools to do it. So, the support I need is someone with the knowhow and tools to put OSX on a clamshell. :-) I'm guessing that the OSX discs that came with my iMac could be used for the clamshell install?
Please email or PM me if you think you can help, as well as how much you would like to do this job.
Thanks!
Rae
Your clamshell will take up to 10.4.11 if it has firewire, 10.3.9 otherwise. The OS X disks that came wih your iMac will not work to install OS X on your clamshell. You need at least 10.2, and preferably 10.3 as most new apps are still okay with it. 10.3, wich comes on four CDs usually, is harder to find - try some of the used mac stores. 10.4 is still around, check Apple stores, and only comes on DVD. 10.5 won't work on a G3. I you don't have a DVD drive, you'll need one to install 10.4.
If you haven't loaded up on RAM, you'll need to - you can get old laptop memory at any number of places - try The Trailing Edge. You need two PC66 3.3v, 144-pin SO-DIMM modules, 256MB each to get either 544 or 576MB of RAM - there's 32 or 64 MB on your clamshell's motherboard depending which one you have.
Hopefully, you have the larger hard drive, not the 3.2 GB - it's too small to install OS X. The 6 GB will work, sort of, but a 10GB is really the bare minimum. If you have a firewire unit, consider purchasing an external FW pocket drive - 80-160 GB will set you back ~$120 at most, and you can use it after you retire your 'book. That way, you can leave the internal system running 9, or boot from the FW drive into OS X!
If you can manage the RAM and get a disk - you can easily install OS X yourself. If you're really not that comfortable, I'm sure someone who lives nearby would be willing to help. What part of town are you in?
Good Luck!
Dan
Hi Dan,
Thanks for your post. I've found someone (*waves to Brian*) who can do the install for me. I have the minimum hard drive requirement (ie. 6GB) and 128MB ram, which Brian will 'soup up' for me a tad. I know that OSX will be slow as molasses on her, but for the purposes for which I need it, it'll be just fine.
Cheers,
Rae
who wishes she'd found you guys back when she first switched to Macs
Just an update to say that the OSX installation and RAM souping up was a success! *thanks, Brian!*
