Title: VMware FUSION and Windows XP question
Post by: ben schmidt on April 10, 2008, 12:17:05 AM
Hi,

Is anyone running Windows XP with Vmware Fusion?  Vmware Fusion's "Take Snapshot" and "Revert to Snapshot" icons are greyed out for me. As is the "Suspend Guest" menu item under Vmware's "Virtual Machines" menu.

Details:
--------
VMware 1.1.1
Windows XP SP2 <-- allocated 1GB RAM
OS X 10.5.2
MacBook Pro <-- 4GB RAM

Details:
1) I installed Windows XP using Bootcamp
2) I installed VMware 1.1.1
3) I pointed VMware at the Bootcamp Windows XP partition (FAT32)
It recognized and booted Widows into the default 'Single Window' view.
4) I installed 'VMware Tools' into Windows XP
5) Windows XP runs fine, including Internet Access and Outlook Exchange access
6) But I can't Suspend Windows XP using VMware's "Suspend Guest" menu item - it's greyed out.
7) I also can't use VMware's "Take Snapshot" or "Revert to Snapshot" as they are also both greyed out.

It's because you formated with FAT32. The snapshot function uses VSS which is a feature of NTFS.

It's because you formated with FAT32. The snapshot function uses VSS which is a feature of NTFS.

I performed a 2nd VMware installation on a Mac Mini, except for the Boot Camp volume being formatted this time as NTFS, rather than FAT32. No change: VMware's Snapshot features, as well as "Suspend Guest" menu item remain greyed out.

However it is definitely something to do with using the Boot Camp WinXP installation. I have since created a VMware file-based virtual machine (i.e. nothing to do with using the WinXP install on the Boot Camp partition), and VMware's Snapshot features, as well as "Suspend Guest" menu item are are restored to function.

If I continue to use VMware off the Boot Camp WinXP installation, what should I do to in Windows prior to quitting VMware? Do I have to perform a time-consuming Windows shutdown? I could do a WinXP "Standby" or even a "Hibernate". A winXP standby seems to be a bit faster than a WinXP shutdown. However a WinXP "Hibernate" isn't much quicker than a shutdown. Are either necessary? I just quit VMware, the WinXP virtual machine has to perform a time-consuming filesystem check at startup time.
